The breakout band of 2006 could well be Panic! At The Disco, this Las Vegas quartet have generated a buzz that bypassed critics and then dumbfounded them by turning hype into genuine and not insubstantial sales. Rock Sound travelled to Atlantic City to interview the band for Issue 83, here is an extract of a conversation we had in the band’s dressing room a few hours before the took the stage… ![]() Rock Sound: What have been the big moments in the development of the band? Brendon Urie (vocals): The live stuff was the first, we got home from recording and we had a couple of weeks to practise and a lot of the songs changed drastically in the studio, it was a huge thing for us to relearn our own music. We had gotten such popularity on websites such as MySpace and Purevolume before we had toured it was difficult to translate that experience live, and now doing our first headline tours will be another massive thing. Ryan Ross (guitar): We really have felt the pressure at times as we have had such attention before we started to tour that the second we hit the road we had critics ready and waiting to tear apart the live show. And that definitely happened, there were more than a few people that were saying that this band was terrible live. The problem was we were learning on tour, honestly I cannot disagree with a lot of what they were saying. BU: Yeah we were terrible. That was the first time we had ever played live, we did suck. But it was because we had not played live before. RR: When I read that stuff I realised I was not the only one that knew we had a long way to go on our live show! RS: What was the actual first live show? RR: We played a show at home in Las Vegas before we left for tour. RS: How bad were the nerves on the early shows? BU: We were nervous but then I was just angry at not being able to play at the level we wanted to. Spencer Smith (drums): I mean we were always going to get stuff wrong but we just looked at it as a challenge, find out what went wrong one night and practise it so it did not happen again the next night. The only problem was when everything went wrong and we only had til the next night to sort it out. RS: How bad was it? BU: We had some pretty major stuff go wrong in the first week but after that we had ourselves together a bit better. We were still bad but not drastically. RR: We are still getting better but I think our headlining tour will be the point where we will do all the things that people say we do not. We want to bring out a cello player and be more faithful to the record live. I remember reading stuff around the time of our first record criticising us but we were playing on a stage that was ten feet wide, if we are going to do all this stuff we would need fifteen people on the stage with us. BU: People just had unrealistic expectations of what the band was going to be like live. How can the opening band of a five band bill, playing to a few hundred people afford to put on a massive show. If we did that we would be thousands of dollars in debt, upstaging headline bands and pissing people off. RS: How big do you guys want it to get and how big do you think you can get? RR: I don’t really think there is a limit, but as long as it is still genuine. We definitely want to get bigger because right now we cannot do things because we are not big enough yet. I have a Bjork DVD where she plays a show with an entire pit orchestra, and that is something I would love to have but we will not get that until we get bigger. Until a point we want to get big so we can do all those things. RS: There is a difficult middle line that you tread as doing all those things might actually take you away from the fanbase that made you big in the first place? How can kids dance in an all seater orchestral hall? BU: Personally, going to a gig I can watch a band and not go and throw myself in the moshpit, I can actually listen to the music and enjoy the show. RR: But it is going to be a challenge for our fans as we have big plans, some bands hate change but we love it and actively court it. I cannot really say how things will change but so far it has evolved in such a natural way and we have not had to force anything so who knows how it will go. I don’t think we will know, I think it will just happen. RS: How is it going home, do parents and people around you see the growth in the band and you as people? RR: My dad figured that I would come back a drug addict, when I show up and I am fine and doing well that sures them up. I think the thing is that they just miss us being around. RS: Were they ever not proud of what you are trying to do? BU: They were never not proud but they were worried, they knew nothing about the music scene and so it did not add up for them. RR: The thing for my dad was that he never went to college, I had a scholarship and was going and he could tell his friends about that but not about me leaving school to be in a band. BU: Going against your parents expectations drastically changes everything. RS: Changing tacks a bit, what is the worst tag you have heard for your music so far? BU: Emo-techno-dance ranks up there highly! RR: Dance-punk is equally glib. RS: How do you describe your music to the uninitiated? RR: It seems that every review we get, whatever they call us is based on the first three songs on the record. If someone thinks that the last song on our record is dance techno they should not have the job they do. RS: Do you think if journalists got your band more then less people would like you and be interested in what you do? RR: It might sound bad to say this but we would rather we do this kind of thing and take less people with us than appeal to the masses. A lot of people who like us now may not like us in the future but a lot of people that do not like us now may like us in the future. I know that if I read about a band that are emo dance punks then it does not set my heart on fire, I would not like my band if I read and believed all our press so far. I hope this changes. source - Rock Sound <3 xxx |
