Interview and Story from Rock Sound

Matt Tuck, frontman of UK metal sensations Bullet For My Valentine has never been the shy and retiring type. rock sound caught up with him in Manchester Academy on their recent headlining tour to talk about America, album sales and burgers. Check it out…

Rock Sound: Have any smaller UK bands been annoyed with you for what you have said and the ways in which you have said it?

Matt Tuck: I don’t know, if anything people should be looking up to us – not musically – but as an example as a British band that can be successful. That’s what it was like for us when Funeral and Lostprophets were up there, it was not a jealousy thing for us it was more of an indicator that we could do that too. That was how we looked at it, if they can do it why can’t we?

RS: You could argue that many other UK bands feel cheated by the amount of press attention you have absorbed this year…

MT: That is not our problem so I don’t give a fuck. I am not interested in anyone else’s band, I am interested in mine. I worked nine years to get here and the last thing I am worried about is what anybody else thinks.

RS: Having waited so long to do this, are some aspects of being a full time band a let down?

MT: The only thing that is a bit pissy is that it is not as rock and roll as everyone thinks, its hard work. There is a shitload of waiting around, for example we have just soundchecked and we are now waiting around til 10pm to play. Stuck here doing fuck all does get boring. Headlining does have a lot of waiting in it, when you are a support act you get a little soundcheck, couple of hours then you play then you are free to watch other bands and have a good time. Now we are headlining we wait, play, get off stage and go to bed as we are so fucking tired.

RS: Is it almost better to be support act as you have less pressure, less anxiety and less waiting time, also is it hard doing a headline set on the material you have?

MT: I don’t know. We are playing an hour and ten minutes each night, we would play longer but by that point I am done and physically smoked so I cannot carry on! We play about thirteen songs in the set and by that point I think the crowd is done too, especially if there are other good bands on the tour. With this tour we can tell by the time we get on that people are tired, anything longer than that could just get boring. Unless you are Metallica and you only have one support band.

RS: Having good support bands is a blessing and curse though right?

MT: Support slots are opportunities to pinch other band’s fans.

RS: Would you still do support tours?

MT: Yeah of course, if the tour is right. The only tours we are now interested in are big tours, if we can sell out Manchester Academy size venues on our own then what is the point doing support slots at venues half the size. Like I said before we are all very ambitious and we only want to go up from here. The only bands we would be interested in supporting would be big stadium bands like Iron Maiden, System Of A Down and those bands. We don’t want to fuck around.

RS: How is it going in America, what size venues are you playing, how far behind the UK is it?

MT: We have only done the one tour over there to promote the EP, that was 500 to 1000 capacities each night so that was alright. We were second on and that was fine, the whole middle America thing was weird as you hear stuff about what people are like before you go and then you get there and you find it is true. When we go back over we are touring with Chimaira and God Forbid so we will be playing larger venues so that will be good, it is also a better tour for us than the It Dies Today tour which was more of a hardcore thing.

RS: Are hardcore kids are too sniffy towards your band?

MT: Yeah, they don’t like anything remotely technical; all they want to hear is the breakdown stuff so they can beat the fuck out of each other.

RS: It is weird then that you are on Trustkill, why did they pick you up?

MT: It’s because they want to sell some records for a change.

RS: Who approached who for the deal?

MT: They came to us and asked to put out the EP, we said no but we spoke to our label SonyBMG about it and agreed it was right for the EP but not the album. The album is not coming out on Trustkill it is coming out on Jive. We are their only metal band so they are excited to have us and they are ready to push the record hard in the US when it comes out.

RS: Do you see America as the priority for 2006?

MT: After this tour we are not really playing in the UK til Festivals, we are off to Germany for a headline tour then we are concentrating on the States til May or June, just hopping from tour to tour to tour and seeing what happens. It’s going to be fun as we are doing a God Forbid tour then going out straight after with HIM and then heading out with My Chemical Romance. We go down best when we are the heaviest band on the bill, with Chimaira and God Forbid we will blend in more, with the other tours we will be a unique band and it will be a bit more challenging but could be more rewarding.

RS: Would you say you are a heavier band live than on record?

MT: Bullet live is more edgy, raw and ballsy, it comes across harder which is what a good live show should be about. For me an album has to sound polished, it has to sound really good but still represent the songs. That leaves you free to just shred live. Live is where we like to have a good time and rock out with the songs.

RS: How are fans with you?

MT: I get hounded everywhere, it is a nightmare. I love it, its nice and I like to give my time and sign stuff or whatever but I tried to go to Macdonalds earlier and it just does not happen. I get nowhere!

RS: It is the thing you always wanted, but once you get it does it feel weird?

MT: This time last year was way more weird as it was all new for us. At the shows we expected it as people were coming to see us but when we had time off and if we were out shopping girls would come up and scream at us and that was difficult to deal with. I am always polite and I always have time for everyone but sometimes I just want to eat my burger.
