credit: joystiq.com Starforce, the one company that is possibly more reviled than EA and Microsoft (on gaming forums, at least), has just lost another publisher. Ubisoft announced yesterday, after a few days of rumors (thanks to everyone who sent those in), that it is dropping StarForce from all future Ubisoft titles. That includes the forthcoming Heroes of Might and Magic V. The animosity between gamers and StarForce has been around since its the company's inception, and claims (both verified and otherwise) of what its security software will do to a computer have been rampant for years. For more information, check out the (possibly biased) Wikipedia entry. |

Starforce isn't a game it is a type of copy protection made by a Russian company that screws up your PC. It is impossible to delete without reformatting and reinstalling. Even then it can cause optical drive read and write speed problems or break it entirely. I would never buy a Starforced game. Since you can't delete it I've heard it can corrupt the Windows kernel. | |

Yeah its in stores in boxed copies of Ubisoft games. I guess it doesn't always cause harm but if you are wanting to burn a CD or DVD you will either get slower speeds if it even works at all. Then it can just curropt your whole system because it's in there just so deep. |

Yeah, Thats also true because in some cases if it doesnt seem to be used alot - Or if its a virus or a hack - Then it can destroy your system - But it takes a matter of time for it to happen. I guess even firwall cannot overpass this application so its in there DEEP. Are there only selected stores that its sold at? |

A firewall couldn't do anything because a firewall protects you from incoming and warns you sometimes of outgoing things. Starforce doesn't need to call home to work. It has nothing to do with the stores. It is just in the games. Viruses don't destroy your system anymore lol they just turn them into spam servers or flood them with ads. It embeds itself into the Windows .dll files and modifies the firmware of your diskdrive. Which breaks it because the Russian company that designed it for the game publishers made it so whenever you burn a DVD or CD you must be a pirate. |
