According to the Office for National Statistics in the UK, a rise in inflation to 2% is partially attributable to the rise in price of video games. February's report states that the prices "for computer games increased in February in contrast to sales a year ago" which is cited as one of the factors that has pushed inflation up from 1.9% to 2.0%, the first increase since September last year. This report underlines the immense economic force behind the video games industry, as well as the UK consumer's (possibly reluctant) acceptance of the increased price of video games. Whilst we've seen signs that current-gen titles are dropping in price, publishers have simultaneously been trying to push the price of AAA titles above $50 for years. Xbox 360 titles now regularly sell for $60 alongside "special edition" games that come with small perks and a $5-25 premium. The effect is even more pronounced in the UK where most Xbox 360 titles sell at or near the recommended retail price of £49.99 (US$86). Credit- Joystiq.com |

When the PS3 hits and if the 360 ever gets some kind of next gen DVD support it will be worse because DVDs cost very little the actual disk. But 15 and 25 gig bluray and HD DVDs will costs dollars or pounds for the manufactoring disk itself compared the dvd cost of under $1. Development costs are getting higher and they will raise the prices higher every generation. They need atleast to add 20 people to each development team for the 360, PS3, and next gen PC games. Because of HD support they need all kinds of people to make sure it works well and fast at HD and 16x9 resolutions. It isn't fare that the UK gamers have to pay even more then the rest of us have to pay. I think last gen games could have been $40 but they wanted it $50. Now that the development costs are rising it definatly needs to be that much but they are raising it a lot more. They definalty don't care about the loss that they take on the hardware because buy 3 or 4 games and the price is equal to or more then what you paid for the console.

I was greatly shocked to see that the average price of a 360 game was $86 US. I cannot believe the British pound is soo much more higher than the US dollar. Thats almost 2:1
