It seems that certain scientists are worried about the possibility of aliens wrecking our IT infrastructure, either intentionally or unintentionally. "Distibuted Computing" programs such as Folding@Home (which is trying to indentify proteins that could combat HIV/AIDS) split complex calculations up over the computers of thousands of people who have downloaded their screensaver. When your computer is idle, your processing power is put to use by the project to assist with their work. Now, a famous one of the projects is Seti@Home which scans the heavens for alien signals, one scientist believes that they people running this project should somehow "firewall" the signals to ensure that a potentially dangerous signal isn't just released onto the Net which could wreck havoc once it gets lose. http://technology.guardian.co.uk/news/stor...1650296,00.html It seems that even ET is out to get us, and not even Norton or Spybot can save us! By the way, to all of you who don't already donate your PC down-time, please do so. It doesn't cost you anything and it can help cure diseases, model climate change possibilities, find aliens and many other thing. The best version is BOINC from Berkeley University in the US, this works on all of the above mentioned projects and many more. http://setiboincdata.ssl.berkeley.edu/boin...ws_intelx86.exe |

I agree farfetched is the right word. Sure it's possible that one or more alien races exist and are advanced enough to crash our net. But it's really not worth worrying about every "what if." |
