Here's A Few Weird Stories/Sightings That Happened In My Own State Of Wisconsin:

On Saturday, December 12, 1998, at 4:45 p.m., teenagers Michael M. and Jerance F. were walking along the Wisconsin Central Railroad tracks in the west end of Manitowoc, Wis. (population 32,520) when Mike heard an unearthly scream.

"It was just past dark," Mike reported, "It was near the railroad, over the rails...Then I heard the most horrifying sound in the world. It was a deep roar, screeching deep, and it was a growl."

As they turned, they saw "a large creature rising behind us, maybe 45 yards to the south. Then it moved toward us, and we ran fast, faster than we ever have in our lives."

Mike's mother, Debbie, corroborated her son's report but added that the creature may not have been a Bigfoot. "But for the most part he did see some kind of white, dirty furred animal that made the most bizarre noise he had ever heard. His friend also saw this animal. At first they thought a train was coming and that the sound was from that. But then they looked and they did not see a train. They heard its weird sound and that's when they saw what they did."

Manitowoc is a port city on Lake Michigan approximately 84 miles (134 kilometers) north of Milwaukee.

On a rain-threatening August 22, Michelle* of Madison was hiking with her companion along the Ice Age Trail, just outside of Lodi, off Riddle Road.

The two had driven out Riddle Road a couple of miles to a turnoff, parked, then hiked the trail back toward Lodi. Along their walk they had spotted numerous birds (American goldfinches, meadowlarks, hummingbirds, an indigo bunting) and marveled at the numerous swallow-tailed butterflies flitting about the wildflower-strewn meadows. They had also kicked up a white-tail deer, which bounded away, making a strange coughing sound with each bound.

They had hiked nearly to the Lodi Cannery -- they were at its periphery -- when they had decided to turn around to return to their car. They retraced their steps through the woods and were nearing the large meadow where earlier they had seen so many birds.

Michelle's companion handed his hiking pack to her and asked her to continue ahead while he took a pee.

She walked along, admiring the mix of hardwoods around her, reveling in the cool wet summer air, and not thinking about anything. A white and red NO TRESPASSING sign caught her eye to the left. She stopped to read the sign, then figured she'd wait for her companion to catch up with her; she was only 25 yards or so ahead of him.

A flash of motion along the trail ahead. Some 50 feet away. Around a slight bend in the trail, a wide scattering of low bushes between her and the flash.

She registered blue. Something blue. Blue, with a hint of gray. Moving along the trail toward her.

Her first impression was that it was someone dressed in a blue jacket, perhaps a rider on a bike smoothly rolling along the trail, and about the proper height. She had remembered seeing at the start that the trail was posted as off-limits to bikes. Miffed, she was readying herself to step aside, and was about to turn to call to her companion to make way for the bike coming down the path.

Abruptly, the blue thing glided to her right, disappearing into the trees. It hadn't seemed to be walking or stepping or bumping along over uneven ground. That was what had made her think it was a bike; the smooth effortless transition between here, on the trail, and gone.

Before it had glided away, the blue thing had seemed to change direction, from coming along the path toward her to a smooth quick transition to the woods to her right. As it turned, she noticed a long blue plume of something, waving from behind its head. It drew her eye, but whether it was feather or hair or scarf, she didn't know. It was waving blue, then gone.

Startled, she turned to her companion who had come up behind her. She told him what she had seen and the two went along the path to where it had disappeared into the bushes. Nothing to the right. Nothing to the left.

Michelle's mind was still insistent that it had been a rider on a bike. But, there was no path through the woods; it was unbroken scrub brush and trees. No trails crossed the path on which they walked.

In either direction they had good views of several dozen yards or more, and partially obscured views even further.

Nothing.

The flash of blue, and silence. No sticks cracking, no leaves kicked as something large moved through the woods.

* * * * * * * * * *

Sounds had carried far all along their path; ripe walnuts crashing through the trees to the grounds; squirrels scampering along the forest floor, the drip drip drip of an earlier rain falling from leaf to leaf.

But where the blue thing had glided ... no sound.

* * * * * * * * * *

The two walked back and forth along the trail, searching for an opening, a trail, some sign that something had passed. The only thing they found was a small pile of scat, something they had noted earlier when they had passed that way.

In other places they had found dog scat along the trail, mostly near the meadow and near a very large log house near the trail. The scat here was a fairly good sized pile and, unlike the dog scat earlier, this was lighter in color and contained many small grain seeds and possibly berries. Not deer dropping, not dog droppings, probably not raccoon droppings, but something else.

Maybe from something blue. Blue, then gone.

Michelle reports that high transmission power lines cut across the landscape nearby.

As with many others, she's still trying to convince herself there is some logical, rational explanation. But all she has is the blue, a swift gliding, a blowing plume of blue, then gone.

Was it creature? Wraith? Spirit? Ghost?

If others have seen strange phenomena in the Lodi area, we'd very much appreciate hearing from you.

If you're on the streets of Stanley, Wisconsin, USA between the hours of 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Central time, you're liable to run into UFO buff John K., out for his nightly walk. Stanley is a small town in north central Wisconsin, 35 miles (56 kilometers) east of Eau Claire and 165 miles (264 kilometers) west of Wausau.

"On Friday night (August 9, 1996), I was walking up a street that faces due east," John K. reported. "August can really exhibit beautiful clear skies, and this (night) was one of them. I was just gazing upward and taking in the panorama when I saw this white light which seemed to be almost 'floating' (the closest I can describe it) across the sky, heading northward. I stopped walking, for I thought the motion was just an illusion caused by my own motion. Well, I stopped but the white light didn't. I'm not too good at judging altitudes and speed, but the light was way up there, seemingly right in between the stars. My guess is that it had to be at least 30,000 to 40,000 feet. The object's speed was probably between 100 and 200 miles per hour. It had to be a craft of some sort because it was an exceptionally clear sky. The object would sort of dip toward the east, then slip back into a northward direction. The weirdest thing is that after ten seconds of watching this thing,it simply disappeared."

"I didn't think too much about it, except that it was strange, so I kept walking up the hill. I stopped about halfway and looked upward, and saw an F-16, or what I took to be an F-16. It was going pretty slowly (usually by the time you hear them, they're gone.) The F-16 was at about half the altitude of the white object and heading east. When I reached the top of the hill, it had banked and was heading north in the path of the object."

"On Saturday night (August 10, 1996) I was on the other side of town and saw something rather unusual. Once again it was about 10 p.m. but I was heading south this time and saw the same kind of bright white object heading at a very slow pace toward the southeast. The strange thing is that it was being flanked by an F-16 (which was practically above my position) about five miles to the north of it (the UFO), maintaining the same airspeed."

John points out that the UFO seemed to be headed in the direction of Fort McCoy.

This is the first UFO sighting in Stanley, Wisconsin since October 1995. For a month, residents reported seeing F-16s flying combat air patrols over the town. On one occasion, an F-16 circled downtown Stanley three times, as if searching for something. The October 1995 flap began when the police department in nearby Chippewa Falls, 26 miles east of Stanley, received numerous reports of "a star" that literally "dropped into the atmosphere and zigzagged to below treetop levels."

A campfire story gone wild?

Highway 13 cuts right down the heart of the state.

For the superstitious, the number 13 may be significant.

Several years ago a DNR warden traveling down Highway 13 just south of Medford saw a figure standing in the middle of the road.

He slowed his vehicle as he approached it. He couldn't believe what he was seeing.

Staring at him was a shiny, green scaled, man-sized, man-like figure.

As he got within several yards of it, wings suddenly popped out from behind the creature's back. The creature went vertical, zooming straight up and passing over the vehicle. It landed again on the road behind the warden.

A winged reptile man.

According to the man who told the story — a man who sold reptiles for a living — a group of highway workers also had a similar encounter along the same stretch of highway.

While driving, they too saw something standing in the road.

Green. Shiny. Scaled.

As they approached the creature, wings shot out from behind its back. It took off, and to their utter amazement, flew away into the trees.

A flying reptile man. Gone in an instant.

The man who told the story has since moved away, or, at least he can't be found.

Readers familiar with West Virginia's Mothman might notice certain parallels to Highway 13's Reptile Man. Mark A. Hall, a Minnesota-based cryptozoologist and Fortean, has posited that Mothman may be a species of giant owl, which he calls Big Hoot. Big Hoot may stand as tall as 6-feet, and have an enormous wingspan.

Could Reptile Man be an enormous owl with weird coloration? A misperceived heron?

Or, was it really a winged reptile man?

Stranger things have crept out of the night, never to be seen again.

Keep your eyes peeled. Watch for signs.

Maybe someday while driving down a lonely stretch of Highway 13, perchance you'll look up and discover a clue to his existence.
