The 1939 classic Gone with the Wind has topped a list of all-time successful films at the US box office, according to figures adjusted for inflation.

Gone with the Wind is the most successful film in the US and the UK

It is one of two movies from the 1930s in the Top 10, the other being Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Star Wars is adjudged to be the second most profitable film at US cinemas, according to research published in the Screen Digest film journal.

The most recent film in the Top 10 is 1997's Titanic, in sixth place.

With Jaws and The Exorcist joining Star Wars, the 1970s is the most represented decade in the Top 10.

"Leaving aside the exceptional nature of the 1930s, we can see a peak in the film industry's fortunes in the 1960s and 1970s, and a relative decline since then," said David Hancock, the author of the research.

"In the face of sustained and growing competition, cinema has ceded its predominant position to other media."

The 20th Century Fox studio has the highest number of titles in the Top 100 with 17, while Paramount and Disney have 15 each.

At 26, the James Bond movie Thunderball is the most successful British film in the Top 100.

Last year Gone with the Wind topped a list of most successful films in UK movie history, based on ticket sales and admission figures.

TOP 10 FILMS OF ALL TIME:

1. Gone with the Wind (1939)
2. Star Wars (1977)
3. The Sound of Music (1965)
4. ET (1982)
5. The Ten Commandments (1956)
6. Titanic (1997)
7. Jaws (1975)
8. Dr Zhivago (1965)
9. The Exorcist (1973)
10. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937)

Glad to see Star Wars and E.T up there. Bit surprised how Gone with the Wind is above them, though.
