Controversial US director Spike Lee has criticised Hollywood for its lack of originality while launching his latest movie at the Venice Film Festival.

Lee is currently shooting his fourth film with Denzel Washington

"I'm not naming any individual films but it's the worst it's ever been," he told reporters. "It's full of sequels and remakes of TV shows.

"There's no originality and that has not always been the case."

Lee is one of eight directors involved in All the Invisible Children, shown out of competition on Thursday.

Others include Ridley Scott, John Woo and Bosnia's Emir Kusturica.

Lee, who is currently shooting the thriller Inside Man with Denzel Washington and Clive Owen, said he was "not impressed" with Hollywood's current output.

However, the 48-year-old said he was "a hopeful person, so I'm hopeful things will change".

Recent remakes include film versions of TV shows The Dukes of Hazzard and Bewitched, both of which received lukewarm reviews from the critics.

Other films released this summer based on previously filmed material include War of the Worlds and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
