Cinema's next Red Buttons, ah, maybe that should read 'Jim Carrey', has snagged another nuclear missile-hot role for himself.

Steve Carell, currently putting cheeks on seats with "The 40 year-old Virgin", has inked a deal to take over for the abovementioned Carrey in a sequel to "Bruce Almighty".

One man's loss - actually, Carrey passed - is another man's gain it seems, with Carrel's news-anchor character from the first film promoted to lead, this time 'round.

In "Evan Almighty", the news anchor character Carell played will go on an Almighty-inspired quest to build an ark in preparation for a great flood.

Tom Shadyac will return as director, and Morgan Freeman's in chats to return as God.

Carell, says Variety, is expected to meet next week with Shadyac and writer Steve Oedekerk to tailor the pic around newscaster Evan Baxter, who in the original beat Carrey's Bruce character for the anchor job and then was reduced to gibberish when Bruce got his mojo.

The studio has warmed to the idea of making a line of future "Almighty" pictures, each of which would include Freeman as God.

"Evan Almighty" will be scheduled around Carell's "The Office," which is in production on a second season.

Darn geniuses.
