Fans around the world are flocking to see the final Star Wars film in what is described as the widest simultaneous global movie release of all time.

Fans in Hamburg, Germany, dressed up for the first screening

Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith will be in cinemas in more than 100 countries by Friday, according to industry publication Screen Daily.

In the US and UK, fans queued to be the first to see it at screenings at one minute past midnight on Thursday.

It is the last instalment in George Lucas' six-film, 27-year saga.

Some 18,700 prints are in cinemas around the world - including 9,700 distributed to 3,700 North American theatres.

The film, which completes the story of how Darth Vader was born, came out in a handful of countries on Wednesday with most of the world getting to see it on Thursday.

In Lima, Peru, Darth Vader took a break while waiting for the film

A few more countries follow on Friday and Japan and South Korea are the only major markets where fans will have to wait longer, Screen Daily said.

The film sold a record number of advance tickets in North America and several other countries, analysts have said.

More box office records are expected to fall when more ticket information comes out in the next few days.

"It's a forgone conclusion that $100m (£54m) is going to be achieved by the end of the weekend," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

"The question is just how high can it go."

The previous five Star Wars films have made a total of $3.8bn (£2bn) at box offices worldwide.

Many fans dressed as characters from the films as they queued for hours - or, in some cases, even days and weeks - for the first screenings.

Fans in Hollywood were led through the streets by another Darth Vader

Jay Greene, 26, who saw it in New York, said: "Regardless of knowing what's going to happen, you still get that excitement, and it's closure."

Christian Miller, 27, in Los Angeles, dressed as Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn for the first screening.

"It's one of my favourite things, like electricity, fire, medicine," he said. "It's proof that myth will have a role in human culture."

Sara Freeman, 19, dressed in a brown Jedi costume in Chicago, added: "I didn't expect to see as many girls as I did. There's not usually as many geek girls as geek boys."

A US consulting firm has calculated the film's release could cost $627m (£342m) in lost productivity.

Meanwhile, DVD pirates are preparing to flood the market with illegal copies of the film, UK authorities said.

Star Wars fever has also spread to Sydney, Australia

Sleeves for pirate copies of the film and discs with director George Lucas' introduction have been seized in London - but the full movie has not yet been found.

"It's telling us that the bad guys are preparing for a mass influx of this product," said the Federation Against Copyright Theft (Fact) director of operations Jim Angell.

I went to see 'Revenge of the Sith' at the cinema yesterday for the first screenings and I recommend that everyone who is a Star Wars fan go and see it. The cinema was packed out solid and their was even some geek in a Darth Vader outfit who sat throughout the whole movie with the outfit on lol
The storey explains how the Jedi got defeated and how Anikan Skywalker turned to the dark side and became Darth Vader.
The opening sequence is amazing, I’ll not give anything away as I don’t want to spoil the movie for you all.
Sinion, I know you’re a big Star Wars fan, I strongly recommend you see this one at the cinema, it’s 100 times more better than episode 1 and 2.

May the force be with you….

Out of the 6 Star Wars I would put 'Revenge of the Sith' in my top 3.
Unfortunately Mr.Lucas being a stubborn person that he is had to prove a point by putting annoying Ja Ja Binx in 2 scenes of the movie, he doesn’t speak (thank god) and it doesn’t spoil the movie in the slightest.
It gave me goose bumps at the end of the movie though as the saga is complete and at a end, sad, but hey.

Just so you know, George Lucas is going to be making a set of animated run-off series which concentrates on the 'not so popular characters' of Star Wars', he hasn’t said who they will be on as yet, watch this space as no dought they will be posted on here as soon as we know.

'Star Wars' earns $108.5 million in first U.S. weekend

Posted Image

Sunday May 22, 3:03PM ET

George Lucas' final "Star Wars" movie scored the second-best three-day weekend of all time on Sunday, but the Force was not strong enough to prevent overall ticket sales in North America from posting a year-on-year-decline for the 13th consecutive weekend.

"Star Wars: Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith" sold an estimated $108.5 million worth of tickets for the Friday-to-Sunday period, taking its total to $158.5 million since it opened after midnight on Thursday.

Its four-day haul sets a new record, surpassing the $134.3 million tally of 2003's "The Matrix Reloaded." Its Thursday tally of $50 million also set a one-day record, beating the $44.8 million sum for "Shrek 2" last year.

The three-day weekend record is held by "Spider-Man," which opened to almost $115 million in 2002. "Revenge of the Sith" narrowly pipped "Shrek 2," which opened with $108 million. Rankings could change when final data are issued on Monday.

The new "Star Wars" film easily beat the opening weekends of its two most recent predecessors, all of which were released by Twentieth Century Fox, a unit of News Corp.

"Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones" nabbed $80 million during its first weekend three years ago, while 1999's "Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace" kick-started the 28-year-old franchise with a $64.8 million bow. They ended up with $311 million and $431 million respectively.

"Revenge of the Sith" answers the age-old question of how the evil warlord Darth Vader crossed over to the dark side. The critics were generally kind, perhaps mindful that "Sith" marks the end of an era and was not as bad as the last two much-maligned films. But Rolling Stone magazine lamented writer/director Lucas' "special knack ... of turning flesh-and-blood characters into cardboard cutouts."

According to box office tracking firm Exhibitor Relations, the top 12 films earned about $156 million during the weekend, down 4.5 percent from the year-ago period. The losing streak is expected to continue into the upcoming Memorial Day weekend since last year's holiday was a record.

"It's going to take a lot to reverse this trend," said Exhibitor Relations president Paul Dergarabedian. New releases next weekend include the animated comedy "Madagascar" and the football comedy remake "The Longest Yard."

Elsewhere at the box office, last weekend's champ "Monster-in-Law," starring Jennifer Lopez and Jane Fonda, slipped to No. 2 with $14.4 million, followed by sports comedy "Kicking & Screaming," starring Will Ferrell and Robert Duvall, with $10.5 million.

"Monster-in-Law" was released by New Line Cinema, a unit of Time Warner Inc. "Kicking & Screaming" was released by Universal Pictures, a unit of NBC Universal, which is majority owned by General Electric Co.

I agree Slotter, the graphics to the new one don’t compare to the old ones, but saying that, in the next 20 years their will be better graphics than their are now so could go on and on lol
