Zach Braff on the Fletch meeting
Posted on Wed, 27-Apr-2005

Looks like Zach Braff's a step closer to slapping on Irwin 'Fletch' Fletcher's trousers.

On his blog, the "Garden State" star chats about his recent meeting with "Fletch Won" director Kevin Smith, to discuss the role.

"Hello there. Today is a big day; my last day at home before I leave for Canada for two months. Scrubs has wrapped for the season, I had a couple of weeks off, and now it's time to start "The Last Kiss". Those of you who are truly interested can rent the Italian film, "L'ultimo Baccio". That's the film ours is adapted from. Paul Haggis, who wrote "Million Dollar Baby" did the adaptation and I tweaked the dialogue a little bit. I'm really excited about this movie.

I met with Kevin Smith yesterday at his house to discuss "Fletch" and/or other projects. He's such a cool guy. He cooked me lunch! It was really awesome to sit down with someone who's had so much success and still acts like a regular guy from Jersey. I jokingly told him I wanted to make "Garden State" action figures. (Because he's got figures from every one of his movies.) He told me he'd put me in touch with the guy who does his. So who knows, I think it would be pretty cool to have a Sam action figure...".

Meantime, MTV talked to Ryan Reynolds who claimed that he had been in talks for the film at one point too.

"I love that movie [Fletch], I love that character, I even love the books," Reynolds said excitedly. "And Chevy's just — the guy's a fallen angel for me.

"Somebody talked to somebody about it, four different times," Reynolds said, admitting he'd been approached. "I think the project has changed hands a few different times as well. Kevin Smith has it now, and I think he's the most capable guy to do that. Kevin is smart because he's going to reinvent it."

Reynolds said he looks forward to Smith's movie, but that the only involvement he'll have with it is if he buys a ticket. "I feel like that's hallowed ground, even for me," he said. "I wouldn't want ... I have no desire to step into those shoes."

"If I were to play it," he continued, "I know that we would have some similar comic undertones, Chevy and I. I think you should just reinvent it and find a whole new way to go."

Reynolds has heard the rumblings about Braff's involvement. "I've actually heard that as well. He'd make a good Fletch, I think. Actually, he'd be great."
