Horses for policemen
in uphill barangays pushed
By Cebu Daily News

IT WILL soon be hooves rather than wheels for policemen in Cebu City's mountain barangays.

During last week's session, Cebu City Councilor Gerardo Carillo suggested to the City Council the use of horses in the city's police force assigned in the uphill areas.

"Horses are environmentally in accord," Carillo said.

He added that horses would also be able to access areas inaccessible to vehicles.

The councilor said he would discuss this idea with Councilors Augustus Pe and Procopio Fernandez for a resolution.

Labella's suggestion came after the approval of Pe's resolution allotting P1 million for the purchase of a four-wheeled drive vehicle, two motorcycles, communication equipment, uniforms and others for Police Station 8.

The station covers seven rapidly developing uphill barangays of Talamban, Bacayan, San Jose, Pit-os, Pulangbato, Binaliw and Agsungot.

The vehicles and equipment will be used to maintain peace and order in the area and to address problems of drug trafficking, fraternity wars and, traffic in the area.

Great idea.

Other advantages aside,
Horses can be bred to increase the vehicle pool.
Hard to do that with combustion engine rattletraps.

Where did they get the idea ?

From the Royal Canadian Mounted Police ?

If they use this type of police transport in the remotest and rugged terrain of the hinterlands they are exposing themselves like a mounted target with a limited chance of ducking for cover if fired upon.

Lucky if only nice monkeys are only the inhabitants of the jungle, how about if the forested area is also inhabited by armed monkeys?

This is what it is for anyway.

from Talamban to Pulangbato they dont need horses since the roads are nicely paved but traffic access are very congested. On that part of the town is where new housing developments have been cropping up and there are 2 international schools on that area. Binaliw and Asungot are rugged terrains where a "secret" waterfalls had been discovered couple years back a lot of European,American expats go there just to back pack and camp out and so are the local adventurists.I had spent 3 nights out there camping and it had been safe it is just when you go back to the Town itself you encounter your typical drunks and other stuff.
But if they do pursue a mounted police I think it is a good idea since those places is only accessible either by foot or by horseback you dont want to park your all wheel vehicle or your truck on the river bed.Havent heard any activities from the Nice People Army so far I heard they always tried to avoid that area since it is just minutes away by chopper from Mactan. Also that trail leads to where Magsaysay's plane had crashed.

Scooters or mountain bikes na lang.

With horses, you will need to feed them, bathe them and bring them to somewhere where they can drop their sh-i-ts.

That will be a big problem.

Get mountain bikes or scooter na lang. :thumb:

Why not make it as a physical fitness routine if they need to patrol those areas ?

Mountain climbing is even a popular sport these days.

a horse is still faster uphill than a mountain bike..and in the hilly areas of metro cebu, its a useful police tranport

Anyway that is just a suggestion from a certain politiko the budget had been approved for a 4 wheel drive vehicle and motorcycle and other needed equipments. But a mounted police patrol would be unique in Cebu and maybe in the Philippines. Besides the scooters are only good on paved or maybe dirt roads. While a mountain bike? :armycheers: you have to carry the mountain bike yourself inorder to get there. And its easy to say you can always shoot the horse while in pursuit, well I thought they have other job descriptions besides shooting criminals? Like preserving the peace while pacifying domestic disputes, maintain order on that place. most incidents does not really involve shooting people does it?By just have a police presence alone gives you that sense of security once in a while.
Anyway with the banning and the constricted routes of the Tartanilla's these days I think those Horses deserve a better chance.
