This really old news, but one that's still worth remembering

ANNAPOLIS, MD: SHE WANTS TO BE THE FIRST PINAY NAVY ADMIRAL

http://www.newsflash.org/2004/02/hl/hl100393.htm

MARYLAND, USA, May 22, 2004 (STAR) By Jose Katigbak (STAR Washington Bureau) - Hanna Lea Alerta has set her sights on becoming the first woman admiral in the Philippine Navy.

Born of humble origins, the 23-year-old Alerta is the first Filipina to graduate from the prestigious US Naval Academy in Annapolis, a 45-minute drive from Washington, DC. Five years ago, she also topped the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) entrance exams.

When Alerta left her dusty fishing town of Digos, Davao del Sur, for Annapolis, half a world and a lifetime away, little did she know she might become a footnote in the annals of the Philippine Navy.

"I’m just taking it one year a time. I’m not going into it in the hope of making history, of (becoming) an admiral. If it happens, it happens," Alerta told The STAR in an interview at the naval academy.

USAFA graduated it's first class in 1959. Since then, there are quite a number of Filipinos who graduated from the US Air Force Academy who have served on active duty. I'm also aware there are fewer applicants for USAFA than USMA, USNA and USCGA.

To name a few:

Lt Colonel Roberto Barangan PAF - first Filipino USAFA graduate
Colonel Abraham Estavillo PAF - PMA Corps of Professors
Colonel Armando Castro PAF - PMA Corps of Professors

Others include Felipe Villafranca USAFA '71, Napoleon Concepcion USAFA '74 (former C-130 pilot, now airline captain), Roberto Ribay USAFA '78, Roberto Ravina USAFA '84, Bernard Lagmay USAFA '90.

Araus Musico USAFA '90 currently on active duty.

I'm sure there are others.

Theodore Karl Quijano

COLORADO - Growing up in the fringes of the Dipolog city airport, Theodore Karl Quijano was bitten early by the lure of flight and that has taken him all the way to Colorado, where he graduates next week from the US Air Force Academy.

With the cost of college proving too much of a burden on his family, Quijano decided to apply at the Philippine Military Academy in Baguio City, and later saw the opportunity to fulfill his childhood dream by competing for a slot in the USAFA.

“I grew up right next to the airport,” he revealed. “I saw planes land and take off every day and the sight made me dream to be able to fly those aircraft one day.”

Rex Eduard Custorio is someone who wants to make a difference in the country. He found his calling in the Philippine Military Academy in 2010.

"Feeling ko mas marami akong maa-affect na buhay kapag pumasok ako (sa PMA) kasi they're training leaders. They're training people to make a difference kaya napili ko po talagang mag PMA na lang," Custorio said.

Memorable experience

2nd Lt. Custorio recently graduated from the ROK Air Force and will soon join the Philippine Air Force.
For him, one of the most memorable experiences during his foreign schooling was airborne training.

He said the Koreans' respect for elders and strong nationalistic pride are among the lessons he brought back with him to the Philippines.
"Napakataas ng drive nila i-develop sarili nilang bansa. Yun gusto kong mangyari sa Pilipinas," he said.

Custorio said that there are now three PMA cadets--two men and a woman-- under the ROK Air Force.

MANILA, Philippines -- A Filipina navy officer, the only female in a batch of 131, has been recognized as the best international student during their passing-out parade at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth, United Kingdom.

Of the 20 foreign cadets admitted to the BRNC this year, only 10, including Ensign Maycee Angga, made it to graduation, the Department of Foreign Affairs said.

The other officers in this year’s batch, who graduated August 11, are from Albania, the Bahamas, Egypt, Libya, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, Ukraine and the UK.

Angga was also the first Filipino to attend and complete the 30-week training course at BRNC with the support of the Philippine Navy and the UK government, the DFA said.
