The Philippines as an ‘Israeli-type proxy’ By W. Scott Thompson The import of Israel influence in America comes from an overriding fact: 64% of contributions to American Democratic politicians come from Jewish-American sources. When President Obama showed Prime Minister Netanyahu the back door of the White House AIPAC — the Jewish lobby — flexed its muscles until Obama turned on his heels. But what does that tell us of the President’s orientation? He knew that the worst thing for Israel was and remains the policies of the Israeli government in refusing to support real negotiations with the Palestinians (confession: at his distinguished home school, of which the current contributor remains Professor Emeritus, a significant clique of professors wanted him turned out for proposing, in an Indonesian paper, a ‘two-state solution.’!) And now European diplomats tighten the screws on Iran, not because they consider this sensible, but merely giving in to Netanyahu’s blackmail to launch a preemptive war on Iran, which most of his strategic advisers consider a potential national suicide. Yes, the Philippines lacks the power to blackmail the US government and president, who, as Filipinos will understand, would like to be reelected president of (and then guess what his policies will be). The Philippines has something far more important going for it. A long time relationship, shared values, and strategic advantage. Israeli policies are leading potentially to a national disaster for them; Filipino policies are the precise opposite, with a popular president highly regarded in Washington. No back door for P-Noy. . . . The Philippines doesn’t have to be a pawn of Washington. Pawns are there to be bought and dropped, as Israel might find if it launched a totally unwarranted aggressive war against Iran. In diplomatic circles worldwide, the Philippines is no longer considered an ‘American responsibility’. It’s a country of almost 100 million, and it straddles the sea-lanes of Asia. Its colonial relationship to the USA is very old news, though there is work to be done in some minds, where it is still felt that Washington determines the outcome of elections here (it doesn’t: the problem is making Washington care enough.) . . . But our Asia strategy starts with the Philippines, because most importantly we are friends. Do we need a more important exemplar than the British-American ‘special relationship’? Franklin Roosevelt contrived our entry into the war thanks to American ties to Britain, with a little conniving and brandy on Winston Churchill’s part. MacArthur and the early Republic here are a different, but illustrative, comparison. And America, from 1946 to 2006, sent among its most famous diplomats to Manila — like Charles E. Bohlen and John Negroponte. It’s time for a reset in our relations, to use the words of Raffy Alunan, the distinguished former DILG head. Yes substantial military assistance. And yes, both heads held high. Philippine Star |

The Israelis are leading the Americans down a path that saps Americas power. When the Israelis have used up America they will move onto some other country to do their bidding. Whenever anyone in the US leadership balks at support they are instantly branded as anti-Semitic and roasted publicly. We have much more in common with the Americans and can actually provide them with alot more in turn for their support of us. This can truly be a mutually beneficial relationship..unlike the parasitic relationship that they let themselves endure with the Israelis. I am not espousing US abandonment of the Israelis but Americans need to seriously re-look at their relationship with a nation that constantly abuses and uses them and refocus on nations that have much more to offer. |

The only problem is, the US have more jewish population and lobbyists than what the philippines could offer. The american government itself are filled with jews or atleast related. In contrast, how many jews are there in the philippines these days? The only jewish family i can think of that could possibly influence the philippine government are those half-spanish families in metro manila and quezon city. And they are hardly called jews anymore. So now we are left relying from our own filipino way to beg for help. |

I think you might be looking at it from a skewed perspective. Don't look at it like we have to have pinoy jews in the us congress. We need to create a lobby that emulates the other successful lobbyists. This lobby will include representatives and funding from the major us companies we currently do business with and intend to do business with as long as the US continues to invest in us politically, economically and militarily. Our lobby needs to show how much, and i hate to say it but, how much money the US and it's companies can stand to make off of working with us and our resources. The US State department is supposed to start getting energized on helping US companies get involved with foreign business. WE as filipinos need to understand that we cant use our current business model, corruption and kickbacks, to do business with American companies because they have laws with serious penalties that prevent them from engaging in that kind of business dealings. In short we need to sell ourselves and our value to the Americans in a few fundamental areas * Low cost, english speaking, culturally similar and educated labor force * Abundant natural resources - oil, gas, minerals * Strategic location - crossroads of asia, WPS/SCS * Jumping point as a hedge against a Chinese hegemony * Bulwark against a (radical) Islamism in Asia. * We are a Christian nation. We need to shift gears from the old paradigm that has failed us and get on board with a new way of doing business. |

In the state of New York alone have 6 million Jews that are above middle class. Most of their profession are in the legal and medical field that is why a lot are in politics and in the government. Their lobbying is probably the tops. This is how Israel gets its funding plus the fact that the Judeo-Chrisitian principle which built America will always play a role in their decision making in helping Israel. Whereas we just started our own lobbying group in the US-Phil Society led by MVP and Negroponte. True, we were part of the United States for 48 years but we need to stretch it further and emphasize that we were part of its founding and development as a nation. i.e. -landing of the first Filipinos in Morrow Bay, California on October 17, 1587 before the first white settlers landed in Jamestown in 1602. -Founded the great cities of Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, California with the Mexicans. -have been in the Louisiana area for the last 300 years and have been a major contributor in the development of their seafood industry. -and a lot more. We are beginning to make inroads in other facets of the the American life like entertainment, sports and now politics. This is where we need to be vocal and make our presence known so that in times of crisis like this we can influence the US government's decision making. |
