Adm. Patrick Walsh, commander, U.S. Pacific Fleet (PACFLT); and Vice Adm. Richard Hunt, commander, Combined Task Force welcomed the participating foreign navies as they announced the official start of the month-long exercise. "For us to be able to hold this exercise today represents a substantial commitment by the countries that are participating and represented here," said Walsh. "Our goal is to ensure a reciprocal level of commitment in terms of training opportunities for those who are here." The exercise will bring to together units and personnel from Australia, Canada, Chile, Colombia, France, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Netherlands, Peru, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Thailand and the United States. "It's an honor to stand here before you with the leadership that we have from each of the 14 nations that are represented in the Rim of the Pacific exercise 2010," said Hunt. "Throughout the one month period, a tremendous gathering of like minded nations will be working together to secure the maritime domain in a way that we have not been able to achieve in the past. We really look forward to the exercise." Walsh said that information sharing is a key enabler and a force multiplier which is one of the key points of the exercise. "It gives us opportunities when we have the ability to communicate with each other to take full advantage of the respective capabilities that each nation brings to the sea," said Walsh. During the exercise, participating countries will conduct gunnery, missile, anti-submarine, and air defense exercises, as well as maritime interdiction and vessel boarding, explosive ordnance disposal, diving and salvage operations, mine clearance operations, and an amphibious landing. Hunt said that the exercise will also emphasize littoral operations with ships like littoral combat ship USS Freedom (LCS 1), the French frigate Prairial (F 731) and the Singapore frigate RSS Supreme (70). RIMPAC is the world's largest multinational maritime exercise, and will take place in the waters around the Hawaiian Islands. The exercise is themed "Combined Agility, Synergy and Support," and marks the 22nd exercise in the series that originated in 1971. http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=54370&page=2 ![]() 100628-N-5684M-756 PEARL HARBOR (June 28, 2010) Sailors and Marines man the rails aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) as it passes the USS Missouri and USS Arizona memorials in Pearl Harbor. It seems the photographer or reporter screwed up when he wrote the photo caption above, since this Canadian warship is not HMCS Calgary (the name of a Halifax Class Frigate) but a Tribal class Air Warfare Destroyer like the one shown. The ship shown is probably HMCS Algonquin, the only Canadian destroyer of that type in Canada's Pacific Fleet and her penant number (DDH 283) even matches the one on the photo. |

Rapidfire, If you read the captions above in your post, you would have seen the pics are from a CARAT exercise, not a RIMPAC exercise. The two are unrelated and happen in different locations. |

Bonhomme Richard Conducts MISSILEX for RIMPAC 2010 By Mass Communication Specialist 3rd Class Marcus L. Stanley USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) Public Affairs ![]() PACIFIC OCEAN - The amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) conducted a live-fire missile exercise July 9 while underway for Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2010, a biennial multinational exercise designed to strengthen operational readiness and improve multinational interoperability. "To be the one to actually fire the missile was great," said Fire Controlman 2nd Class Caleb Scott. "It's very rare that we get to do this, and we've put in a lot of man hours preparing for this." During the firing exercise, Bonhomme Richard launched a NATO Sea Sparrow RIM-7P missile, giving the ship credit for a live missile shoot. ![]() The Wasp-class amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) launches a RIM-7 Sea Sparrow as part of a missile exercise (MISSILEX) during Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2010 exercises. RIMPAC is a biennial, multinational exercise designed to strengthen regional partnerships and improve interoperability. (U.S. Navy photo by Mass Communication Specialist Seaman Katherine K. Barkley/Released) Two teams stood by ready to fire, and as the launch took place Bonhomme Richard Sailors and Marines, along with an array of multinational militaries on board the ship, had the opportunity to witness the firing. "It was an amazing event to see," said Cryptologic Technician (Technical) 2nd Class Raphael Hobson. "That was my first time ever experiencing something like that." In preparation for the firing, Combat Systems Fire Control 4 workcenter completed more than 50 maintenance checks, more than 300 hours of pre-fire requirement checks and more than 100 hours of troubleshooting faults to ensure that the missile systems were up to standards to conduct a safe missile firing. "Our guys put in a lot of time getting ready for the firing," said Fire Controlman (SW/AW) Chief Jose Zertuche. "Everyone was a major contributor, from the maintenance guys to those who were a part of the administration portion in getting ready for this." Zertuche added that anytime you are conducting missile shoots safety is paramount, and every safety precaution was taken into consideration during the exercise. "What a great day of training aboard such a magnificent warship," said Capt. John W. Funk, Bonhomme Richard's commanding officer. "Superb efforts went in from everyone that participated in the missile exercise, and a Bravo Zulu goes out to everyone for successful completion of such a challenging event." http://www.pacom.mil/web/Site_Pages/Media/...AC%202010.shtml |
