Undersecretary Mario Deriquito, who signed the memorandum of agreement with Huawei last week, said they were “not aware of this allegation when we signed the MOA with them and accepted their donation.”

“We consider this a serious matter. We will look into this and study the matter very well before we do anything,” said Deriquito in a text message.

The Huawei computers, worth P8 million, are supposed to be pilot-tested at the DepEd’s central office in Pasig City before being used nationwide for the “Adopt-a-School” program.

During the signing of the MOA, Huawei said the installation of the 50 terminals will be completed within this month.

Michael Hayden, who served as CIA chief from 2006-2009, earlier claimed that Huawei has been spying on Western countries on behalf of China, a charge the telecoms firm has dismissed.

Britain and Australia have also raised the same concerns.
