Philippines top cyber attack source, says Russian security firm By Paolo G. Montecillo Philippine Daily Inquirer/Asia News Network Monday, Apr 02, 2012 PHILIPPINES - The Philippines has been tagged one of the world's top sources of a dangerous kind of cyber "attack" designed to take down entire computer networks and shut down key consumer services. The latest report by Russian Internet security firm Kaspersky Labs showed the Philippines ranking 13th on a list of 23 countries where "distributed denial of service" or DDOS attacks originated in 2011. A DDOS attack makes a computer or network unavailable to its users by hackers in control of several devices. This is done by flooding a server with more network traffic than it can handle. As a consequence, the server is prevented from carrying out its normal functions and, in some circumstances, crashes completely. The Philippines was one of four Southeast Asian countries to make the list, the others being Malaysia which ranked 5th, Indonesia 18th and Vietnam 19th. Over 90 per cent of all DDOS attacks came from the 23 countries on the list. Some two per cent of the attacks came from the Philippines, Kaspersky Labs analysts Maria Garnaeva and Yury Namestnikov said. "DDOS attacks are used as an act of protest as well as a highly effective tool for exerting pressure on competitors," Namestnikov said in a statement. "It comes as no surprise therefore that online trade (online shops, auctions, message boards) was most frequently targeted," he said. Kaspersky said attacks were also conducted against businesses, including travel company websites. Unknown groups conducted these attacks during the summer season when travel was at its peak, as well as the Christmas and New Year holidays. Last year, the number of DDOS attacks around the world rose by 57 per cent. "This figure may increase in the coming months of 2012," Namestnikov said. In 2010, the Philippines was one of the top 20 countries around the world with the highest incidence of cyber crimes. Of the list of 20, six were from the Asia Pacific. http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...402-337168.html |

Probably accurate findings. Why? Look at the website of NPA, http://philippinerevolution.net . Articles and essays and posts are very very revulsive with smacks of bragadiccio, vindictiveness and mocking expletives! I would not contest that finding not only because it is true but because Russia is our no. 1 supplier of arms nowadays. 10 thousand AK-47s from Putin through his campaign manager, epigone plus more to come or maybe some had arrived already. Plus the fact that my Russian language teachers are the most patient and tolerant in teaching me the language. |

The military should look into this and let this be part of it's arsenal. |

You don't scandalize Putin with these and make a mess out of these. He is busy strengthening national security for all of us just like the way he duped Saddam Hussein's generals that made the liberation of Iraq easy as pie. The only professional intelligence officer in the world. The rest of us are amateurs! If Sison is really a courageous militant, I advise him to slander Putin just the way he slanders Pnoy and Marcos. Eh, hindi, dahil alam niya Putin rules with an iron fist while the democratic Americans and Filipinos will respect his freedom to speak. Patay siya if he criticized Putin because of the latest arms shipment near ______ . Patunay lamang na ang kaya lang niyang patayin through land mines are 10 year old children who are not even to blame for the alleged 'crimes of America'. Only unarmed civilians ang kaya niyang patayin at balaking patayin gaya ko.. |

Agreed. But we should only target countries that are considered as a threat to our interest not our allies.

If there were really shipments of these AK47, i want to know when. Kasi, based from red's various youtube videos, they were still mostly armed with M16. |

Hundreds of hackers linked to telco fraud in Philippines Manila (Philippine Daily Inquirer/ANN) - Philippine telecom firms lose millions of pesos in revenues annually to hundreds of illegal operators that bypass global payment systems to convert long-distance calls to domestic. A leading telecom executive on Tuesday described the magnitude of the problem following the arrest on Friday of three Taiwanese nationals and their Filipino cohort for allegedly running a call bypass fraud syndicate from their condo units in Makati City. The arrests were made by the National Bureau of Immigration on a complaint from Smart Communications Inc. ¿It is definitely a substantial amount,¿ said Smart spokesperson Ramon Isberto, who declined to give figures when asked how much his company has been losing to such syndicates. Isberto said Smart is monitoring ¿several hundreds¿ of possible international call bypass operations mostly based in Metro Manila. The company can look into these activities by checking for unusually heavy usage patterns by individual SIM (subscriber identity module) cards on its network, he said. Using advanced computer technology, he said, syndicates may be able to bypass the normal payment systems for international calls. As a result, long distance calls are only charged as domestic calls. Isberto said the criminals tap this technology by selling long-distance call cards overseas. ¿These cards usually tell users to call a certain number. Then the operators here are able to switch the call to make it seem like a domestic call,¿ he added. NBI agents on Friday arrested Taiwanese nationals Wen Shang Yang, Huang Jian Wei and Jang Yuan-JR, as well as Filipino citizen Ruben Vallespin, inside their respective units at Makati Cinema Square Tower on Chino Roces Avenue and at Palm Towers in Barangay San Antonio also in Makati. Rolando Paruli Jr. of the NBI¿s Computer Crimes Unit (CCU) said the raiding teams also seized GSM (global system for mobile) gateway devices, routers, cables and ¿thousands of assorted SIM cards.¿ The suspects were detained at the NBI headquarters in Manila and charged with theft and violation of the Access Devices Act and E-Commerce Act before Makati City prosecutor Analie Brual. A complaint filed by Smart at NBI-CCU noted the extraordinarily big volume of international calls monitored from the condominium units. The NBI secured search warrants from Manila Regional Trial Court Executive Judge Marino dela Cruz. According to Paruli, call bypass syndicates usually contact international gateway operators and offer cheaper termination fees, enabling them to corner deals while using legitimate gateway facility operators like Smart. While call bypass operations are legal overseas, only a few companies are licensed to operate in the Philippines, the NBI official said. Both Isberto and Paruli said the government also loses heavily in terms of unpaid taxes due to these illegal operations. SOURCE |

Really? Ano naman kaugnayan nito sa computer hacking and DDOS attack as source? Plus the news came from Russia of all places. |

VP Binay urges cybersecurity upgrades vs 'reality' of cyberattacks Citing the "reality" of cyber-attacks from other countries —like the ones that marred the standoff between the Philippines and China at Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal— Vice President Jejomar Binay pushed Monday for upgrades in the Philippines' cybersecurity capabilities and infrastructure. Binay stressed this at the end of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Development and Cyber Security Enhancement Workshop of the National Defense College of the Philippines (NDCP).
