MANILA — The Philippine Navy (PN) plans to send a contingent of Filipino sailors to the Vietnam People's Navy (VPN)'s Naval Shipyard X46 for training on the art of modern warship construction.

Naval Shipyard X46, also known as Hai Long Shipbuilding, is equipped with state-of-the-art shipbuilding equipment and is capable of constructing modern, high-speed warships weighing up to 500 tons.

This proposal came up during PN flag-officer-in-charge Vice Admiral Alexander Pama's visit to Vietnam early this month.

During his visit, the PN chief discussed the proposal with VPN head Admiral Nguyen Van Hien , who was described as very receptive to the proposal.

If the deal push through, PN personnel would gain more knowledge in refurbishing and repairing their naval vessels thus translating to saving as the PN would no longer rely on foreign and commercial dockyards for their maintenance. (PNA)

We all know why we checked on this thread. At first i thought the PN was looking to build their own state-of-the-art warships witht he help of our vietnamese friends. Yung pala just to learn how to maintain and repair their own ships. How i wished they mentioned both, maintain and build or develop their own in the future.

Another media error?

How come Vietnam's navy got knowledge in modern naval construction and we are not when in fact we have decent shipbuilding facilities here like Keppel, Aboitiz FBMA etc. I think we made our own patrol ship much earlier than they have but now we are about to learn from them, hahaha what happen guys! are you sleeping for centuries...

it's a start, send some people there to observe and learn how things are done, then return home to apply those learnings - repair & refurbish first then full builds later on.

its not like after returning here, these PN guys can immediately build a ship at the flick of a finger.

what superman is saying is we already have the know how and technology in ship building especially in commercial vessels, we were way ahead of Vietnam in ship building and now suddenly we are going there to learn how they do it. It really does not make sense. what we have are a bunch of traditional backward politicos thats our problem. but we know how to build choppers, missiles, ships, turbo prop aircrafts, APCs, SEAVs, assault rifles and hand guns, our government is just inutil. komprende? zztopy? if still no komprende then you are one of them. lol.

If our people are indeed to be trained, this means a shipyard in the phils. might be upgraded as well.

Who knows, maybe in the future we could build frigates, even destroyers of our own?

If you people care to remember, Vietnam is a communist state and in a communist state everything is owned by the state, including military shipyards - which in Vietnam's case are owned by the VPN, it's navy.

Keppel, Aboitiz, etc are world-class shipbuilders but these are private enterprises. The government cannot just go there, assume their facilities so it can build ships for the Navy.

Yes frenzy your are right what we have here is a world class shipbuilding, but it doesn't mean we can't tap them to assist us in building our own navy ship, There is a thing called joint venture or public private partnership of course they can't just use the facility but the thing it's already available here. If the Navy is really dead serious in building our own ship then they can hire a private individual or a consultant to design or whatever technicalities needed but I don't think they have balls to even start it, sabi nga puro hangin lang tayo o kaya puro drawing lang! Teka di ba mas madali and humingi kesa gumawa e di humingi nalang tayo sanay naman tayo sa ganun kita mo this year meron na ulit bagong hingi hehehe...peace!

you hit it the bullseye superman. our government is just lazy period. for them the best things in life are free. we always beg and beg as just as many beggars in Manila, so as our government is a beggar, what goes around comes around and we are not even ashamed of it and we want respect to the world? what a joke.
