3 AFP officers to undergo court martial

Posted on March 28, 2012 10:38:08 PM

THE ARMED Forces of the Philippines (AFP) will subject three of its senior officers to court martial after investigators found them accountable for the clash between the military forces and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) guerillas at Al Barka, Basilan last October.

This came after a pre-trial investigation conducted by a panel from the Philippine Army recommended a court martial after finding probable cause, said Army Chief Lt. Gen. Emmanuel T. Bautista.

Mr. Bautista named former Special Forces Regiment (Airborne) commander Col. Aminkadra Undog, former commander of Special Operations Task Force Basilan Alexander Macario, and former ground commander of the 4th Special Forces Battalion Leo Peņa. He did not mention whether Orlando Edralin, the former commandant of the Special Forces Training School, who was previously implicated along with the three would be included in the proceedings.

Messrs. Undog, Macario and Peņa will be tried for violating Articles of War No. 97 in conjunction with Article 365 of the Revised Penal Code or "acts of negligence that prejudice good order and military discipline."

Last December, an arranged Court of Inquiry recommended the conduct of a court martial for the four military officers after a newly deployed Special Forces unit found themselves in an eight-hour fire fight with MILF guerillas which resulted in the deaths of 19 soldiers and five MILF troops, as well as several injuries from both sides.

A lack of proper coordination from both sides was blamed for the incident.

Mr. Dellosa allowed a pre-trial investigation to give the charged officers a chance to refute allegations. -- Mariae Francesca C. Ramos

its about time for accountabilities or what they call command responsibility, too many valuable lives wasted for negligence. this is what we need more in the country and get serious.
