MANILA - Brig. Gen. Daniel Lucero, the commander of the Philippine Army’s 1st Tabak Infantry Division, died on Sunday after a diving accident.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines said the member of the Philippine Military Academy class of 1983 "was diving at Tabak beach, Tukuran, Zamboanga del Sur during the reception of newly assigned 2LTs when he collapsed.”

He was declared dead at the Mendero Hospital in Pagadian City.

Journalists also took to social media to lament the death of Lucero, whom they considered one of the good guys in the military.

Lucero was AFP spokesman during the time of AFP chief Gen. Narciso Abaya. He was named part of the Ten Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS) in 2011.

Rear Admiral William Masinloc Melad PCG took his oath as the 26th Commandant of the Philipine Coast Guard before DOTC Secretary Joseph Emilio Abaya in his office at the Columbia Towers in Wack-wack, Mandaluyong City early this morning.

President Benigno Aquino III finally appointed Rear Admiral Melad PCG after its former PCG head Admiral Rodolfo Isorena retired last October 2015.

Said oath taking was followed by the 2016 New Years Call of the PCG Officers to Secretary Abaya.

Rear Admiral Melad is a proud graduate of PMA Class “Matikas” 1983 and is the Officer-in-Charge of the PCG prior to his appointment as the Commandant.

A member of this class for the next AFP Chief?

As quoted from an Interaksyon article posted at the AFP Chief of Staff thread:

MANILA - Presumptive president Rodrigo Duterte is eyeing a chief superintendent (brigadier general or one-star general in the military) to replace Philippine National Police (PNP) Director General Ricardo Marquez and a senior officer from the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Matikas Class 1983 will assume as new chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), a reliable source from the inner circle of Duterte told InterAksyon.com Monday.

The source gave the information on condition he be not named for lack of authority.

“Yes, it’s Chief Supt. Dela Rosa sa PNP and Lieutenant General Visaya para naman sa AFP,” the source said.

The source was referring to former Davao City police chief, Chief Supt. Ronald dela Rosa (PMA Sinagtala Class ’86), for the top police post and Southern Luzon Command (Solcom) Lt. Gen. Ricardo Visaya for the top military post.

Reshuffle, retirement of senior officers won’t affect military programs, says Armed Forces chief

Quote:

Those who will retire are ARMED Forces Chief Eduardo Año himself (October 26); Lt. Gen. Romeo Tanalgo, Northern Luzon Command chief (September 4); Lt. Gen. Glorioso Miranda, Philippine Army chief (October 8); and Lt. Gen. Edgar Fallorina, Philippine Air Force chief (November 1).

The four are all members of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Matikas” class of 1983 and would be reaching their mandatory retirement age of 56 on these dates.
