lets refresh ourselves on what Mr Z. posted about TA-50..

Well, since many of you seemed to have already have hints, here are some facts of the offer per documentation... TA-50 + radar + excess F-?'s + trainings + logistics support + frigate/destroyer + armament. They are also the potential supplier for the F-16's upgrade

Ever since i've read sir Z's juicy hints on the freebies i've been curious about the "frigate/destroyer" classification in his post for the 'free' ship. I dismissed it at first as a generality of his hints or just something of no consequence but decided to research a little more. When it comes to frigates the Ulsan class is what usually comes to mind for the giveaway. But checking on it further this ship is classified more strictly as a frigate.

There is the Gwanggaeto the Great or KDX-I class which is interchangeably referred to as destroyer or frigate. The 3 ships in this class are bigger, newer and more capable than the Ulsan being built mid-late 90s (can carry helis as opposed to the Ulsan) so obviously more expensive. This is just be conjecture on my part that this is ship referred to as the freebie but as it is part of a big package in the deal then who knows?

I believe that the frigate/destroyer freebie is not the new ones but of the older and decommissioned types....

Any other way, it's a plus for our PN. :D

As insane as this sounds it might NOT be unrealistic: SK only built three KDX-Is but plan to field 12 of the newer KDX-IIs. KDX-IIs will form "mobile squadrons" with KDX-III AEGIS AAW destroyers:

Each mobile squadron will initially consist of a 7,600-ton KDX-III Aegis destroyer, three 4,500-ton KDX-II destroyers and maritime aircraft, he said.

When a forward-deployed naval base is built on the southern island of Jeju around 2014, the fleet is expected to be boosted by 2,300-ton next-generation FFX-I-class frigates, Type-214 1,800-ton submarines and other support vessels, he added.

Korea Times

No mention of KDX-Is. It doesn't make economic sense to operate such a small number of KDX-Is which have inferior technology vs KDX-IIs so . . .

There's precedent: the oldest of eight M-class frigates joined the Dutch navy in 1996 and yet six were sold to three other navies 2004-2006. Modern frigates less than ten years in service and yet sold off.

KDX-Is for the Philippine Navy? Stranger things have happened.

What i noted about KDX-I is that the sokor navy planned about a dozen of this but discontinued it after only building 3. It implies that this class is no longer part of their long term plans (made obvious after the succeeding classes were built) so maybe these are deemed "more disposable". as i previously said "who knows?" baka sa sobrang awa sa atin ng mga sokor ibigay sa atin at least at a friendlier price :drunk:

anyway, i found at another military forum a roughly comparison of some of the current frigate classes in use in east asia and the australian navy, including the gwanggaeto.

KDX-I? possible
Modernization should prioritize:

Patrol Ships with air/sub/ship detection, fast & lightly armed for Navy.
Surface Attack Aircraft with anti ship/sub attack capability for Airforce.
SAM with Radars, Close AA battery capable of shooting ground targets too for Army.
This triangle defense will work together and protect us from external threats.

The South Koreans have no plans of retiring any Gwanggaeto the Great class destroyers anytime soon.

Navy rescues 107 from sinking ferry
TUESDAY, 24 JULY 2012 19:51

ZAMBOANGA CITY - The Navy rescued 107 people - passengers and crew - from a sinking wooden-hulled ferry off Tawi-Tawi.

Rear Adm. Armand Guzman, Naval Forces Western Mindanao (NFWM) commander, said the 107 people were rescued around 7 p.m. on Sunday, five nautical miles off Sibutu Island, Tawi-Tawi.

Guzman said Naval Task Force 62 based in Panglima Sugala town has dispatched the BRP Dioscoro Papa upon receipt of phone call from Babylyn Omar, dxGD radio station manager, who sought assistance for a ferry in distress.

Investigation showed that ML Lucky Man was sailing to Sibutu, an island-town, when its engine conked out after it was battered by big waves, Guzman said.

The skipper of BRP Dioscoro Papa, Lt. Arthur Angue, said ML Lucky Man was already half-submerged when the rescuers arrived.

Angue said that most of the passengers were in panic and some of them were already on the ship’s roof, while the others have jumped into the water.

Angue said the rescuer provided basic needs and treated minor injuries of the passengers and crew of the ship.

The passengers and crew and other cargo were transferred to board BRP Dioscoro Papa and ferried them to Sibutu, Angue said.

Guzman said Sunday's rescue operation is a manifestation of the Navy’s commitment of ensuring safety at sea here in Western Mindanao.

The Navy has already rescued a total of 414 people, including Sunday’s rescue, in different occasions since January 1 this year in Western Mindanao, Guzman said.

Again as I said:
Why don't you try to get Australian Adelaide class frigates(OHP)?
They've been fully modernized and refubrished and will be decomissioned in 2013( first ship) due to purchase of new ships. They've got everything you need, brand new systems , and very good ASW capabilities.

These ones meet modern sea warfare requirements imo, ships especially from Europe will be expensive to maintain.
BTW : With a possible 'clash' with China you should buy subs in a greater number+air recon+planes with a-ship missiles.
One single submarine is always a thread for any navy. One single ship is a great target to practice (even 3 or 4 when compare with Chinese fleet).

Surface fleet in your circumstances should consist of cheap patrol vessels produced in the country( the most expensive equipement - gun: OtoMelara or Bofors 57mm with AA capabilities as an option)+ chopper hangar. You could have a fleet to underline your rights to debatable areas in a peace time. If it comes to war - surface fleet won't be any match for CHina. Sad but true. So imho it is better to go German's way during I especially II WW - submarines with a strong backup of attack and recon planes. It's cheaper and more effective.
