Authorities suspect Abu Sayyaf behind Zamboanga City bombing Nov 29, 2011 Zamboanga Today Online There is great probability that the Abu Sayyaf were behind the bomb explosion which occurred Sunday night at the Atilano Pension House in barangay Canelar, this city. City Police Director Sr. Supt. Edwin de Ocampo, in yesterday morning’s City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) meeting held at City Hall, disclosed there are indications that the ASG were the ones who planted the bomb that killed at least three people and injuring 28 others. He said the bomb components used by the suspects is TNT and is signature to the Basilan based terrorists. “The bomb used at the Mon’s Kitchenette in Isabela City and at the Red Palm Pension House and now at the Atilano Pension House are similar in nature. DIPO Western Mindanao P/Dir. Felecisimo Khu said the explosive has a mixture of gasoline similar to the blast in Isabela where the kitchenette also got burned because of the incendiary materials used. Khu said investigators are zeroing in on a man and a woman who checked in at room 222 at around 7 p.m. and hurriedly left the pension house at 9 p.m. barely 30 minutes before the explosion occurred. “After the explosion in this city, businessmen in Isabela City allegedly received calls from unidentified callers who were extorting money from them saying if they will not give to their demands similar incident will happen at their establishments,” Khu said. De Ocampo said the police have now in custody the recorded video footages of the pension house’s CCTV camera which will be evaluated by police experts. Mayor Celso Lobregat said they still cannot say whether or not there were security lapses on the part of the security guards and the owner. “All these are being checked,” Lobregat said. Authorities are set to meet with the owners of pension houses in the city to brief them on what to do when visitors are checking in at their establishments, the chief executive pointed out. “We will also see if we can bring in sniff dogs in pension houses to help in securing the facilities. This explosion is another setback to the city especially on the tourism aspect. It’s a step backwards but let us take 20 steps forward,” Lobregat said. The mayor said in January year 2000 or eleven years ago a similar explosion occurred at the same pension house but those killed were the suspects who were assembling the improvised explosive device that exploded prematurely in their midst. Police here are quick to blame Abu Sayyaf (who are they anyway?). Are they sure that the bomb was the handiwork of Muslim groups? |

More than a few politicians and economic families would be willing to plant a bomb for their own agendas and gladly point the finger at a Muslim group. |
