Estrada: US strengthened Moro rebels by John Anthony Concepcion FORMER President Joseph Estrada on Monday said the Moro Islamic Liberation Front was able to boost its ranks because of US support as shown by its uncommon interest in the peace negotiations between the Philippine government and the rebel group. “Of course,” Estrada said after Karen Davila of the ANC news program Headstart asked him if the MILF grew because of US support. He said the United States’ support of the MILF could be seen in the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain between the Philippine government and the MILF, which granted territory to the rebel group but which the Supreme Court eventually struck down. “You could see it in the [memorandum],” said Estrada, who urged the government to launch an all-out war on the MILF after the Moro rebels killed 19 soldiers last week. “It’s a good thing that the Supreme Court acted fast to declare it unconstitutional.” Estrada said one reason that could help explain the US government’s interest in Mindanao was that it needed to station troops in Southeast Asia. “They know the future enemy of the US is China, and we were able to remove their bases in Clark and Subic,” he said. He said he first noticed the US government’s interest in the peace talks between the government and the separatists when he was president. He recalled that no less than US Defense Secretary William Cohen hand-delivered a letter from US President Bill Clinton to him in Malacañang after he ordered the Armed Forces to wage an all-out war against the MILF. The letter asked him to “desist from an all-out war” with a promise that the US would help modernize the Armed Forces. “First, why did President Clinton send his national defense secretary to personally hand-carry his letter if Mindanao wasn’t important to the Americans?,” he said. “The White House could just have called the US Embassy here and told the ambassador to see me. Why did he send his defense secretary to travel 10,000 miles just to hand me his letter?” Estrada said he ignored the letter and did not recall his order, and in just three months in 2000 the Armed Forces were able to overrun 46 MILF camps, including Camp Abubakar. Still, he said, the Arroyo administration reversed his all-out war policy against the separatists and started talking peace again. Mrs. Arroyo even allowed US Marines to stay in Zamboanga. When Kristie Kenney was appointed ambassador to the Philippines, she spent more than 60 percent of her time in Mindanao, Estrada said. He said the US government supported the memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain. Kenney was even present during its signing in Kuala Lumpur. But the memo, if it ever became valid, would have allowed the MILF to have nine provinces as a sub-state. Estrada said even the WikiLeaks cables proved that the MILF was looking to the US for support in the peace negotiations. A Wikileaks cable dated Oct. 19, 2009, revealed that high US officials met with the rebel group’s high-ranking members. Another Wikileaks cable indicated that the MILF even wanted a “parallel dialogue” with the US government, he said. In the House, meanwhile, Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya jr., an Aquino ally, said talk of restiveness in the military over the President’s refusal to wage an all-out war on the MILF was an insult to the Armed Forces. Interesting and disturbing for me. Imagine SecDef Cohen sending us a letter that stated that our government should cease all military operations against the MILF. |

the US had always been interfering in government affairs, thats what happens when a country welcomes and receives aid, grants and FMS from the US. these are not free, that means they will have a say in in foreign policies, US interests etc. the only way for the country to free from US intervention is by having a nationalist dictator or communist form of government which most of us dont want for sure. Im sure the US also have many spies embedded in Philippine govt up to the AFP making sure the US is up to date. one just have to play the game, there is nothing really you can do except the 2 options above. lol. |

I spoke with my unlce's Russian partner here in Mindanao and he said to me is that to keep the US from reckless behavior is allowing other major powers to compete for contracts, exploration and mining rights here in Mindanao so that to have a competition and those with a better offer will be the one that will win, that was his style when he went here and joined up with my uncle. Similar also to the styles of my uncle's Korean and Chinese partners. |

Did you know before the MOA-AD became a massive issue here in Zamboanga and the rest of the peninsula, several US educated Muslim speakers went to ADZU and attempted to butter up the social elites and concerned citizens, if memory serves me well their were almost weekly visits. To add the US ambassador went also and accompanied several speakers as well they stated that we must trust the Moro's and give it a chance, however we showed our displeasure hell I even invited my uncle's Russian friend and he even told me that during the Ukrainian Orange Revolution that US agencies like the USAID were reportedly giving money and support to Viktor Yushchenko. That made me very suspicious about the USAID action here in Mindanao, also many of my friends and my uncle's friends were even more suspicious of the American's intention. |

our intelligence services probably may or may not know it regarding their intentions if not our intels should at least try to find out what the intentions are to guide the govt and make right decisions. But the USAID is an intel org and so as the Peace Corps, this are all link to the intel services of the US. thats why the Peace Corps where banned in Russia after they were caught organizing dissent and disinformation activities what you call covert activities. thats why if im the govt i would banned the peace corps, its not because of being anti US but we dont want any of these people creating dissent while thinking they are helping the countryside but actually at the same time collecting info and dissent if needed and making sure all is going well with US interests, and what about our interests? we want to secure our own interest too. |

Our national interest is not limited in Mindanao but the entire Philippines, sugar coating the US activity here in Mindanao is very amusing for me. Another thing that is interesting is that for several years according to my uncle's friends and business partners the USAID have been building roads in areas that have huge mineral deposits and mining sites and the odd thing is that these roads are not that use by the local and these roads are in places that are so remote that ig you go to these places you can count the people you see. Another thing is that for nearly a decade "environmentalist groups" have been lobbying the local government here in Zamboanga and the several places here in Mindanao to revoke the licenses of the big mining companies and the small companies as well and the strange thing is that these groups are being funded by USAID and US NGO's. I even listened to their lectures and I came to the conclusion that they are attempting to stop the local companies and are very determine to kick out non-US investors like the Russians and the Chinese out. |
