It does not matter of Erap deliberately started the offensive. He was the President and Commander-in-Chief at the time he was well within his rights to define his policies against the MILF insurgency. (I'm not a fan of Erap) But Trillianes or any soldier has no right whatsoever to lunch coup attempts against any government, whether they are politically correct or not. I don't care if the government is too corrupt or incompetent. This matter is for the polity to decide. Soldiers absolutely should have no hand in politics. If he want to go to politics then he should remove his uniform. As to whther or not Erap's offensive defeated the rebels, well, the facts speak for itself. MILF is still there and stronger than ever, so did Erap defeat? The rebels at that time made what we academically call tactical withdrawal: the camps were proving hard to defend so the rebels withdrew to preserve their ranks and reorganize. But by no stretch of imagination can this be called a victory for the rebels (enemy) were not eliminated, they were merely displaced. As to the policy of GMA, she's simply too much of a politician to entrust the country with. Actually in Mindanao, MILF, ASG, politicians, their lines are blurred since their relationships crisscross each other. One time they are in teh jungle waging war the next time they are in the twons running for elected positions (or their relatives). In GMA's case, she courted this politicians and did not act against them even if their links to ASG or MILF were visible. They were giving her political backing, especially in the days when she was being challenged by Trillaines/Lim with coup de tat, and the Erap and opposition in Congress and media were agitating for another people power (remove her from office). She was clinging to her dear life and she found sanctuaries in tehse shady characters in Mindanao. So she striked a bargain (with the devil): she will not touch them or look their way but they must ensure their political backing to her... At least this is specially true in Basilan and Jolo. |

I do not want to say multitudes of rhetoric about this MILF. Originally the are enemies of the state, but were given concession by misguided politicians to bring forth their aims of secession. In the beginning before this insurgents gained notoriety as a consequence of the governments ill-advised policy, they could have been easily crushed. From then on that they were able to gain momentum, they became a political football that regimes were blaming each other for failure to contain these rebels let alone the failure to persuade them into the right negotiating table. Can negotiations arrive to a meaningful solution? My answer is never in my wildest dreams because these rebels are putting forward their impossible agendas in the negotiating table the government could impossibly come to terms with. The solution? There is no other except an all out war otherwise these rebels can reproduce themselves into a formidable force in the future generations with the same protracted failure of the government. Negotiating with rebels is a sign of weakness..... just my two cents... |

Why are they doing that? Simple, they smell blood on the air and they correctly assessed that the Government is so incompetent and disorganized that it is not in a position to effectively counter them. If no smart strategy is implemented soo, we're doomed. |

We need a really smart leader at the moment. The fight against the MILF is not only military, we also have to isolate them diplomatically from Muslim countries that might otherwise be sympathetic to them. At the moment I'm not sure the Government is strongly pursuing this important front in the over all war against the MILF. This conflict is so complex but not totally hopeless. Our Government need a very smart strategy that leverages on existing strengths and assets. We cannot slave the conflict to some future military modernization. TIME IS NOT ON OUR SIDE. We have to be innovative in maximising what we already have at our disposal. As I always mainatined we need an intelligence based strategy: KNOW, DISORGANIZE & NEUTRALIZE. |

Can we please return former Pres. Ramos to the Presidency...? We need him or somebody like him, with military confidence and leadership skills. Never mind if he does another AMARI deal, I just need more our country stabilised than immaculately moral/clean.) |
