War is inevitable in Mindanao.
Lalo na ngaun. Sunod-sunod ang mga ambush sa AFP.

kung d naman kasama si asnawi sa milf, the military should ask the milf's permission to hunt asnawi's group down. clearly he is not covered by the agreement if that should be the case :rifle:

Eventhough, if the MILF leaders are really serious in implementing peace between them and the government, and are serious in requesting their needs for independent federal states, then by all means they should have been helping and cooperating with the government specially in hunting down those ASG, no matter how much relatives or sibling they have with that terrorrist group. The point is, they cant just hijack the government with a gun at their head and asking everything they wanted or needed even if its unrealistic. Hell yeah, it's a one way traffic.

Military launches air strikes in Zamboanga Sibugay

MANILA, Philippines – The Armed Forces of the Philippines launched air strikes as part of its law enforcement operations to arrest notorious kidnapping group led by Juaning Abdulsalam in Zamboanga Sibugay, a military spokesman said on Monday.
About 200-strong combined elements of the Philippine National Police and the Philippine Army have conducted the operations backed by OV-10 gunships and armored vehicles in Sitio (sub-village) Taib, Labatan village in Payao town, Zamboanga Sibugay, said acting Army spokesman Major Harold Cabunoc.

It's really what's in the Air that will make the difference, the Govt. Should try to consider acquiring AH Cobra's from the US for CAS, they have better accuracy than OV-10s and to minimize civilian casualties, a squadron of these will defnitely solve the problems, but that's if??? They are willing to solve it and not to prolong it??!!!

the gall of these military officers threatening to resign!

they flubbed the operation in the first place by sending greenhorns unsupported then claim demoralization when PNoy said he was dismayed by their performance - the ground commanders behind this disaster should not just be releived, they should be demoted or even court martialed!

MILF told to hand over 6 wanted men

MANILA, Philippines - The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) wants the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to surrender 6 people who were involved in attacks on soldiers, police, and civilians last week.

The military is demanding the surrender of Waning Abdusalam, Putot Jakaria, and Ogis Jakaria with regard to the attack in Payao, Zamboanga Sibugay.

The Moro rebels should also hand over Abu Sayyaf Group comander Furuji Indama, bandit leader Long Malat, and MILF commander Laksaw Dan Asnawi in connection with the the Ginanta-Al Barka case, the AFP said.

Lieutenant General Raymundo Ferrer, Western Mindanao Command (Wesmincom) chief, also said in a press statement Monday that the military and police will continue with their joint law enforcement operations against the group led by Abdulsalam.

"He should be brought to justice for all the past kidnappings and extortions done by him and his group. The clamor of the people from Zamboanga Sibugay is to end Abdulsalam's notoriety," Ferrer said.

Since the MILF is claiming that Abdulsalam as one of its commanders, the Wesmincom chief said the rebel group "can actually assist us, through the AHJAG (Ad Hoc Joint Action Group) and CCCH (Coordinating Committees on Cessation of Hostilities)."

He said the deaths of soldiers last week will will not affect the military's campaign against lawless elements in Basilan and Zamboanga Sibugay.

President Aquino’s statement on the aftermath of the armed encounter in Basilan, October 24, 2011

__________________________________

Statement of His Excellency Benigno S. Aquino III
President of the Philippines

On the aftermath of the armed encounter in Basilan on October 18, 2011
[Delivered in the President's Hall, Malacañan Palace, on October 24, 2011]

On the 18th of October, the Armed Forces began operations to pursue lawless elements in Al-Barka, Basilan. It resulted in the neutralization of nine criminals; unfortunately, 19 of our own soldiers were also killed.

Our soldiers were in pursuit of criminal elements with valid warrants of arrest—among them the fugitive Ibrahim Malat Sulayman, a leader of the Abu Sayyaf bandit group and a notorious criminal wanted for nine counts of murder. They are criminals whose actions stand outside of the peace process and what it signifies.

There have been calls to wage an “all-out war” against the MILF. While it is tempting for government to join the chorus in calling for blood, we believe that such a course of action is not appropriate at this point. We are not interested in knee-genius reactions that will jeopardize our efforts to address the roots of conflict in the region. Anong klaseng pag-iisip ang nagsasabing awayin ang lahat, sabay-sabay, miski ang nananahimik, sa lahat ng sulok ng Pilipinas, para lang masabing may ginagawa ka?

We recognize that these calls, or at least some of them, for all-out war may come from those who do not have a full awareness of all the factors at play. However, my decisions cannot be borne out of ignorance. They have to be based on available facts. It is so easy, out of frustration, to close the door on negotiations at this time. If we go down this path, more innocent civilians will be put in harm’s way. The difficult peace process cannot be enhanced by shedding more blood and generating more ill will. We have to exhaust all possibilities for attaining peace through dialogue.

We will not pursue all-out war; we will instead pursue all-out justice.
All-out war is indiscriminate and borne out of anger. All-out justice is sober and fair; it is based on the rule of law, and leads to lasting peace.

In line with this, I have instructed intensified operations against all these criminal elements. The mailed fist of the state will be brought to bear upon them so that justice may be served. There is no question that the state will find them; the only remaining question is when. There will be sacrifices in addressing this decades-old problem. We expect everyone to understand this, and are confident of the cooperation of our citizenry.

This is not a purely military or police effort. Our local government and community leaders must assist in our efforts to achieve a holistic solution to the problems of the region.

In conducting their operations, our armed services have always been, and always will be, mindful of the safety of the civilians. Rest assured that the government will do everything it can to maximize the safety of the people and attend to their needs.

The men who sacrificed their lives in service of our people have the deepest respect of their commander-in-chief, and the utmost gratitude of the State. Siblings of one of the deceased, through their mother, indicated their desire to enlist in the military, in the midst of their loss. As I stood over their remains, I made a personal pledge to do all that I can so that, in the future, such sacrifices will no longer be necessary.

Let me remind everyone that there are those who will try to use this incident to gain political leverage and further agitate the public. Rash decisions fueled by a thirst for vengeance can only serve to dishonor the memory of the 19 brave souls who died last week, and the many others lost in our efforts to win the peace.

I urge our people to keep their eye on our long-term goals.

Army chaplain: 'No to war!'

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – The Catholic chaplain of the Army’s 4th Infantry “Diamond” Division based here on Sunday called for sobriety amidst the strident calls for an all-out war against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front to avenge the deaths of government security forces who have died in recent clashes and attacks by the rebels.

Fr. Leonides Cruel Jr., who holds the rank of major, also slammed those urging President Benigno Aquino III to abandon peace talks and order the military to go on the offensive.

“It’s very easy to call for war. But will those who are urging the President be the ones who go into the frontlines to fight the MILF? Will their brother, sister, son, daughter, husband, wife go to the war zone? No! They will stay where we are and just command the foot soldiers to wage war,” he said.

Cruel said those itching for war with the MILF “are not thinking clearly.”

“I was asked yesterday (Saturday) about my stand as a priest on this issue. My reply was ‘to look at Christ and His example. What did Christ do when He was falsely accused and charged? What did he do when He was flogged and crucified? Did any of His followers cry ‘war’ against the Romans? What did Christ do when he was hanging on the cross? Did he curse those who accused Him and called for the wrath of God to fall on them? No! He prayed for them and asked God to forgive them,” he told parishioners composed of enlisted personnel and their families and relatives at the packed St. Ignatius de Loyola Chapel in Camp Edilberto Evangelista, the 4th ID headquarters in Barangay Patag.

The chaplain, waving a copy of the book “War Wounded” by Gail Tan Ilagan, urged those urging the government to wage war against the MILF to think and look deep inside themselves if they are following the example of Christ, whose name they carry as Christians.

“I always read this book. And I urge you to also read this so you will know what war is. I know it is a very common saying that ‘no one wins in war.’ But I say, there are winners in war; but they are not the combatants. The winners are those who make caskets, the funeral homes, the manufacturers of firearms, weapons and bullets, the middlemen when there are transactions, the suppliers of uniforms and military equipment,” he said to soft giggles from the parishioners.

He said that soldiers should not be defined by muscle, brawn and courage at the frontlines nor how snappy they are but by their ability to think and decide as Christians.

“This is why, as a person, as a priest and as a soldier, I am happy to be a Christian because we have a Christian president, a Christian commander-in-chief who thinks and make decisions as a Christian, a president who does not let emotions and the clamor for war cloud his vision for peace to be attained during his term,” he said.

“So my answer to those who asked me my personal stand on this ‘war against the MILF’ issue: No to war!” he added.

Cruel, however, said his stand does not mean government should stand by and not do anything to punish those who commit crimes.

“Even if we imposed again capital punishment or death penalty against the criminals, this will still not prevent crimes from being committed. The only way to stop crime is for those in authority to be sincere in pursuing and punishing those criminals, beginning with those in government,” he said.

“Sincerity, that is the missing element in our fight against criminality,” he added.
