It is but a matter of political will. even if the AFP is ill-equipped at the moment, the valor and character of our troops is unquestionable. I'm not fully advocating all-out war, but if that's what it takes to finally eradicate the armed threat being posed by secessionist groups masquerading as freedom fighters, then so be it. It can be done, it has been shown that we can accomplish this during the term of Erap, we were so close to achieving victory, but at the last minute, we did not follow through to the end. Any rebel group will never be sincere in peace talks if they have still enough military capability. Let us destroy the armed component once and for all, before we seriously consider peace talks. I, along with my men, will do what is asked of the military, even give our lives if we have to, but not in instances like this, which clearly could have been prevented. We will all die sometime, but not in vain, I pray. Even if I am demoralized by this debacle, I am still a soldier and will still fight for the freedom of my countrymen and the territorial integrity of my country. I hope that our political leader show the same mettle. It has been said that the armed forces are merely an instrument of the state. That is precisely correct, so please, let us have more upright leaders with "balls" who will not waver from their campaign promises to gain political and media points or "papogi" and will not spend more time discussing their lovelifes than the state of the country or its own Armed Forces. |

military aspect is just one. first, fully modernize the AFP. with priority on attack choppers, fixed wing attack aircraft (for heavy bombardment), armor vehicles, more artillery bases, better equipped soldiers, UAV. then, economic development (with the modernized army giving protection versus saboteurs). roads, ports, schools and govt offices to spur growth. then the peace talk. then full scale war if talks fails. |

the military part may just be one aspect of this conflict but it is the central part. You can continue on the peace talks for all you want at this point but there will be more attacks like this on our troops, making heroes out of those who perpetrate it and making it easier for them to recruit more into their ranks. If we do not demonstrate that we can totally eradicate their armed component decisively, they will never capitulate and go to the negotiating table with any sincerity. Look at Libya for example, there was a time that Qaddafi was talking about negotiating with the rebels. Would the country have been liberated had the rebels not used military force and have negotiated early on? No. They destroyed Qaddafi forces one by one, albeit slowly and at a high human cost. But in the end they succeeded. They killed Qaddafi and now, they can negotiate and talk all they want with different factions to finally reform Libyan government. I fully stand by my view that we must first crush them totally to force them to the table. Look back to history and tell me which country negotiated with its enemy without having been totally, abjectly defeated in war first by their enemies. |

I'm really frustrated right now. We loss 19 good soldier and Government peace panel just want to file protest? Why not suspend ceasefire in Basilan only and go all out war. I'm not a war freak but its commonsense that we need to control the numbers of rebels in basilan. Because if PH government do nothing about it. I will not be surprise after six months their will be 50 soldiers dies in an ambush or encounter. Because rebels knows that PH government will not going to fight back but will only file murder cases and file protest.. anyway wala bang namatay sa side ng asg/milf? |

you have points there. i agree on that too. i was looking at a strategy that will lessen the casualties on both sides though. we can do a full scale battle like the Summer 2000 and that Libyan story. but let's not forget, we can also repeat the RP-MNLF peace agreement and that Sri Lankan peace talk. We can even do better. |

Two Philippine soldiers dead in new guerrilla attack Two Philippine soldiers were killed Thursday in a fresh Muslim guerrilla attack on a southern island following the killing of 19 soldiers earlier this week, the army said. Two army trucks in a convoy were ambushed by suspected Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) men along a road on the island of Mindanao, said an army report to the regional military headquarters. Two soldiers were killed and four others were wounded in the ambush near the town of Alicia, and 12 men in the convoy are missing, the report said. The attack came two days after MILF forces killed 19 soldiers on the remote southern island of Basilan in one of the worst outbreaks of violence between the two sides in years. MILF spokesmen could not be reached for comment late Thursday. The fresh fighting has further complicated efforts to end one of Asia's longest insurgencies, with the MILF and the military trading accusations of breaking a ceasefire in place to promote peace talks. The 12,000-strong MILF has waged a rebellion since the 1970s for an independent Islamic state or autonomous-rule in the southern third of the mainly Catholic Philippines. The rebellion has left about 150,000 people dead, with most of the deaths occurring in the 1970s when an all-out war raged. Although the two sides signed a truce in 2003 that paved the way for peace talks, the ceasefire is frequently marred by clashes across the vast southern Mindanao region that Muslims claim as their ancestral homeland. http://ph.news.yahoo.com/two-philippine-so...-191601897.html Sh!t!!!

Yes, i do believe we can do so too. Forgive me for being emotional, but it is really very hard to lose so many fine young men who gave the best of their lives for their country and ended up losing it while their politicians trivialize their sacrifices. The loss of a life is never an "isolated" incident. Tell that to the families of the fallen soldiers who have lost a father, a brother, or a husband. Such a waste.. |

the strategy is to launch a counter-offensive and hunt down the attackers even if they seek refuge in any MILF base. if the MILF allow refuge, let's attack the MILF base too. the air support, artillery bases and armor support should be on the red alert everytime a team of soldiers are sent out. also, before a counter-offensive is launched a monitoring committee must decide if the attack was defensive (in cases where the military really intended to penetrate the agreed upon MILF camp) or not. if the attack was unreasonable, the order must be given to thwart more attacks on military convoys and patrols. but we are only having this committee rule because of the peace talk. in it's absence, let's attack in every opportunity. |
