PHILIPPINE National Police chief, Director General Nicanor A. Bartolome yesterday met with an ex-policeman-turned winner of the first edition of the ABS-CBN hit show “Pinoy Biggest Loser” and said he will turn the latter as the PNP’s “poster boy” when it comes to weight reduction and fitness training.

Biggest Loser winner Larry Martin said it is an honor for him to personally meet with Gen. Bartolome who is known for having a fit body as a result of his regular physical fitness program, and aired his wish to be given another chance to rejoin the 140,000-strong police force.

Martin said he was forced to resign from the police service due to his failure to meet the 34-inch waistline for PNP personnel ordered implemented by PNP chief-turned Senator Panfilo M. Lacson in 1999.

The former Police Officer 1 ballooned into a 255-pounder jobless man until he joined the hit ABS-CBN reality show where he battled it out with other heavyweights for the crown starting last May.

PNP search for ‘Biggest Loser’
Posted by Online on Jun 11th, 2012

Manila, Philippines – The hunt for the “Biggest Loser” is on in the 143,000-strong Philippine National Police (PNP).

Director General Nicanor A. Bartolome, PNP chief, ordered yesterday the accounting of all overweight and obese police personnel and immediately subject them to a weight reduction program.

“Our desire is to make them physically fit to perform their respective duties, we want our personnel to be healthy leading a very active and healthy lifestyle,” said Bartolome.

Bartolome issued the order after learning of the study that of the 6,253 personnel assigned in Camp Crame in Quezon City, 3,283 of them are considered as overweight while 588 others are obese.

But unlike the popular reality program in which a former policeman got a huge sum of money and a residential unit as prizes, the Bartolome said what is at stake in the PNP weight reduction program is the career of each personnel.

He explained that a sound body is essential in the police profession as lawmen are expected to outrun, outmuscle, and outsmart criminal elements in the performance of their duties.

Drop it! 3,000 cops given 8 weeks to lose weight
MANILA - Thousands of policemen will have to undergo an eight-week program to lose weight after they failed to meet a height-to-weight standard instituted by the National Police.

PNP spokesman Sr. Supt. Generoso Cerbo Jr. said around 3,000 policemen - half of the personnel at Camp Crame - were overweight, with body-mass indeces (BMI) beyond what the PNP considers acceptable.

"It is important for policemen to be healthy. Physical fitness can be equated to good performance in our jobs. The concern of the PNP, more than anything else, is the health of our personnel," Cerbo told reporters.

Maybe as part of the training, the PNP should introduce "PARKOUR". They need that in their line of work.
