It is not the US intervention in furthering the MILF cause in the peace talks that i am afraid of. It is the creeping intervention of other islamic countries that i am afraid of. Remember the Libyan dictator? How about the arab support? What about the other islamic influenced states in the Southeast Asian Region? A third force element could come into the picture. In the end, the defense interests of both the US and RP will suffer.

A bigger headache in regional security problems will arise. Maybe i am wrong.... But MILF precedents and track history tell a different story.

It all boils down to the people who will suffer and those who will feel the need to respond in kind.

To me the US sit back and assets the situation more clearly and precise and look at the possible consequences.

To my mind, a policy that gives all the benefits to a known extremist group in building up a state infrastructure, territorial expansion and power domination is a deadly mistake. The US cannot afford to support the creation of an islamic state with strong jihadist influence.

It contradicts US Policy on the global war against terror. Why create a state for a group that has committed atrocities? The MILF-jihadist alliance is true. I say the policy is defective and should be trashed in the garbage bin.

They should establish the truth by a second assessment of the situation in Mindanao.

Here is part of the US objectives in the war on terrorism:

-Deny sponsorship, support and sanctuary to terrorists.

-End the state sponsorship of terrorism.

-Enable weak states.

-Eliminate terrorist sanctuaries and havens.

-Partner with the international community to strengthen weak states and prevent (re)emergence of terrorism.

Sponsorship of MILF efforts in the peace process is giving support and sanctuary to terrorists. As i said before, the MILF has a foreign element of terror alliance and support.

One policy that is widely adopted all over the world is no compromise/negotiation with terrorism. This extends to its supporters and allies. The problem with the bureaucrat hierarchy in the Philippines is complacency. The MILF warlord group has alliances with known terror organizations and yet the MILF as an ally that gives support and sanctuary to terrorists was never declared as terrorist.

Also with the Wikileaks revelation a lot of ultra-nationalist here in our country will have a field day as they see a continued and obvious intrusion of the US in a internal affair.

It's not really intrusion but advice from a major treaty ally.

The MILF case on the other hand is not purely an internal due to oil supply prospects. That was complicated the GW Bush foreign policy.

In the other hand, the US must be very careful now in making those advisories so as not to be viewed as an intervention already.

I could paint a worst case scenario.... After the creation of the separate state the MILF will build its "police" forces. Religous bigotry will arise as soon as they become the dominant power in Mindanao. Forced selective displacement of people seen as non-Moro will be initiated. Violence against these other people will be done. The threat of genocide may arise.

Strategic resources will in due time be used to create more base infrastructure and arms buildup. The MILF state will later on renege its agreements to the national government and declare a fully independent state. Given the success of the MILF, state support and alliances will pour in from foreign islamic sources. Attempts at expanding territory will continue due to the greater military capability of the mutated MILF Pan Islamic Jihadist State.

This is just a shortie. Care to add your own assessment?

better if we discuss this in the sub-state thread.

Not everyone sees the same light, but I would suggest that the US better be prepared for the risk involve in not consulting those who are directly affected.

I just heard that the US ambassador went here in ADZU and my friend who works in the faculty asked about this topic, the funny thing is that the ambassador attempted to avoid it.

under the GW Bush policy, the US reliability and integrity might have been ruined with his and his dad's business interest.

with Obama allowing the neutralization of Osama, we can have a more reliable partnership with the US now.

their intervention on Syria saved the world economy somehow because had they let the Syrian rebels fight the Khadafi forces alone, the war would have dragged on for months and got many killed.

China never acted on that.

Russia didn't as well.

It was only the US and some NATO allies.

Imagine if the US and NATO did not intervene?

So, you see, the global game is complex.

I hate to say this but somehow the ambiguity in the foreign policy brought about by an action that is counter to good reason should be looked at in a longer term or wider perspective. Otherwise, the immediate interpretation of the foul play will surely overwhelm our thoughts.
