Aquino met al haj Murad Ebrahim of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) for nearly two hours at a hotel near Narita airport on Thursday evening. They were joined by the heads of the negotiating teams. "The two leaders agreed to fast track negotiations to end conflict in the southern Philippines," a member of the rebel peace panel said by telephone. He described he meeting as a "getting-to-know-you" session. "This is something we can hope for, but there's still a lot of legwork to do in the coming months." A government official confirmed the meeting, but declined to give details. "We will issue an official statement later, but it's definitely a positive development in the peace negotiations," the official told Reuters.
