Split from The Malampaya Oil & Gas Project thread.

Our family went to Palawan last month for a much needed vacation, while on board a motorized banca we hired for a sightseeing trip, the boatman told us that while on board a fishing boat earlier this year, they saw what looked like a submarine periscope jut out of the water, looked at them for several seconds then disappeared...now who could this be? Americans?
To avoid criticism, write nothing, say nothing, do nothing, BE NOTHING.

There were many periscope sightings reported by Filipino fishermen before.
My uncle told us that while assigned in Eastern Samar as an army capt, near Guiuan (sp?), fishermen reported to their detachment that they saw a submarine surface near a known wreck of a Taiwanese trawler which sank during a typhoon. It was a moonlit night and they said they saw the sub break through the surface, when asked for the hull number, the fishermen said they saw no numbers.

I guess the AFP knows about these sub intrusions but just cant do nothing about it.

Damn.

So these Chinese intrusions have been going on for a long time.

Submarines... we need anti-sub capable warships ASAP. :armycry:

^^ I agree, but we also need submarines. IMO, ASuW capabilities of surface ships are not really designed to find and hunt-down submarines (unless if you have ASuW capable ships in huge numbers) but for defensive measures against submarines.

Enemy submarines are not easily deterred by surface ships even if they have the gadget to detect and hunt down subs. Let us all remember submarines are designed to strike surface vessels. The best way to deter them is to also have our own submarines.

Having 1-3 submarines (and some ASuW corvettes/frigates) by the year 2020 will deter not only PLAN-submarines from intruding our waters, but also other PLAN-surface vessels as well, most especially their carriers.

the official philippine navy records show that there were submarine intrusions in Quezon province, eastern luzon in the 1950s several times as the commies were trying to smuggle in arms to the HUKs. The philippine navy depth-charged these submarines, and there was oil slick after one depth charge so maybe it was damaged or the sub crew's eardrums got busted .

there were also many second-hand accounts from fishermen in mindanao in the 1970s of submarine/warship intrusions trying to smuggle arms to the MNLF.

another report is of russian subs in philippine waters - this was in the 1980s at the height of the cold war - forgot where i read this.
