Anything on additional armament or is the refitting just for upgrading electronic suites?

Weapons system

In welcoming the new star of the Philippine Navy fleet, President Aquino said the vessel would boost the Philippines’ defense capabilities in the country’s exclusive economic zones, including the disputed waters of the West Philippine Sea.

“When he visited, he was just happy that the ship was here, the latest in the inventory of the Navy,” said Cruz.

“We really need more assets in Palawan, considering there’s a big area to be patrolled. That’s why this is a big help,” he added.

Before it was turned over to the Navy, the Del Pilar’s modern weapons systems were removed and only basic armaments were left on board, according to weapons officer Lieutenant Ronald Paras.

What remains of the ship’s defense system is a deck-mounted 76mm/62-caliber main canon at its fore, flanked on either side by an antimissile system called the MK 36 Super Rapid Bloom Offboard Countermeasures Chaff and Decoy Launching System.

The Navy plans to install 25mm chain guns in the ship’s rear, six mounted 50-caliber guns and two 20mm canons, Paras said.

Aside from the WHECs, there will be OPV acquisitions as well and maybe this is where they will concentrate on acquiring Missile/ASW Capabilities.. Hopefully... :dunno:

Now the Navy’s flagship, it is undergoing refurbishing and is being equipped with new surveillance and electronic systems at the Sangley Point Naval Base in Cavite.

Oban said high-level talks between the AFP and the US government on boosting the Navy’s capabilities are underway.

There's your answer folks, quoted above. While the Goyo is at Sangley Pt for electronic upgrades, the AFP and US govt is talking.

Plans and Schedules for the WHECs on current and future upgades which includes missiles and asw systems. This may not mean it starts with GOYO, but provisions are being planned for near future installation.

The timing of the high level talk is the CLUE. if GOYO will just get a 25mm and 2-20mm, do you really need a high level talk with the US?

Why cant they just arm Goyo with missiles and ASW to convert it into some formidable frigate/missile corvette....?

I don't think the AFP is planning to arm Goyo with missiles soon. Probably ASW capabilities.

I think the AFP is planning on acquiring ships that are built to handle it or are made for it (missiles).

It could be anything, a media error again for saying it's a highly level talk with the US, or you could be right.

Arming it with atleast an ASW system will be good enough for it's needed defense. But they should arm it with all that missile system while the PN still shopping for a missile corvette, you know just to fill the gap. The more they leave Goyo a missile less, the more the philippines will be falling behind its capabilities compared with other asian neighbors.

we are all oozing with anxiety guys.........i think we have to let things play out.

all we know are some clues, one of which is that Sen. McCain of Arizona said that the acquisition of these coast guards ships will be followed by missile installation. This guy is ex-Navy pilot who fought in Vietnam and was a POW. He has good access to Intelligence. I think he heard something genuine otherwise he won't be saying it.

I believe the Hamiltons will be carrying missiles and asw but whether the install. will be sooner or later when other Hamiltons are made available is another question.
