Based on this updated list from Seawaves, it looks like the PN will indeed get 2 more 378' High Endurance Cutters from the USCG and will be designated as PF-16 and PF-17 respectively...

PN was given the the priviledge for Exercise Option of additional min of 2 and max of 8 WHEC's, as per Cuisia statement on May 2011. However, PH govt is eyeing a totally brand NEW V-hull type of foreign design and w/ US standards, noting the Austal has won contract w/ USN to develop new ships and will be done in Cebu, enabling a minimum of 2,000 jobs.

What does "PF" stand for? "Patrol Force", "Patrol Frigate"?

I really hope our Navy will soon acquire ships from Cebu.

Kidding aside... How do you define a modern frigate?

Quote:

A warship, usually of 4,000 to 9,000 displacement tons, that is smaller than a destroyer and used primarily for escort duty.

Quote:

However, during World War II frigates were reintroduced by the British as a form of antisubmarine escort larger than a corvette and smaller than a destroyer
. Destroyer-type ships called frigates are important combat vessels today; however, there is no clearcut uniform distinction between a frigate and a destroyer. Modern frigates are often armed with antisubmarine weapons and guns; many are missile-armed and some are nuclear-powered.

http://encyclopedia2.thefreedictionary.com/Frigate

Quote:

Modern frigates are specially constructed ships used for locating and destroying atomic submarines at sea and for defending aircraft carriers from naval, aircraft, and rocket attack. Frigates in the US Navy have a displacement of up to 6,000 tons, a speed of 34 knots (63 km/hr), and a range of 8,000 nautical miles. They are armed with long- and short-range antiaircraft rockets, rocket-torpedoes, conventional torpedoes, and naval artillery— usually one 127-mm all-purpose automatic cannon and two 76-mm antiaircraft guns. They have a crew of 350–370 men. In the early 1970’s, series construction of frigates with atomic power plants was begun in the USA.

None of the definitions above matches the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (PF-15) because it was a cutter in the US Coast Guard. In the Philippine Navy, it should have been called a large corvette and designated as PS (patrol ship).
