The low rate of arms infusions into the Philippine military is indeed true.

Past records will attest to this. Compare how much weapons other countries got like Pakistan and you'll see that we are least of their priority.

Nonetheless, there were reasons on the Pakistan arms transfer or support. The Al Qaeda case compelled the US to support Pakistan that much.

The Hamilton-class ship is set to sail to Manila and Clinton has reiterated its support.

Best of all, PNoy himself allocated P14 billion for the military items.

Those facts overshadows the "US hesitation" news article by a Chinese newspaper who's obviously on a psyops mode.

I agree, but still it's always better to have a Plan B which is normal thing to do...

Plan A
--> arrange a peaceful resolution of the case.

Plan B
--> bring the matter to the international court.

Plan C
--> confront the Greedy Big Bad Bully with military force and let our Big Brother rattle some more. :thumb:

Plan C+
--> Plan C plus cripple China's economy by severing ties with them and supporting Taiwan and work with Big Brother to convince all nations to relocate business to ASEAN, Africa, Middle East, South America and anywhere but China and Hongkong.

I agree. We should rethink the so-called One China policy. If there's going to be any peaceful resolution, it should be one which is favorable for us for a change. By any definition of international law, the Spratly's and Paracel islands belong to us. We should offer favorable terms to US-based oil exploration companies, that should be incentive enough for the US to support our lawful claims to our territories.

In regards to procuring military equipment, imo, what we need are front-line combat aircraft, which we can source from several countries, not necessarily US made. Regarding naval ships, as I've opined in another thread, we can make our own fast missile boats. What we need is the weaponry that will be mounted on them.

just for the sake of being a contrarian, lets say, that its true that the US is "hesitating" or slow in responding.

Well, we need to realize that the US govt is a bureaucracy which is inherently slow to respond, and secondly, they do need to check if our aid requests are legitimate , thats just the nature of bureacracies.

while its true that other countries get much bigger aid, the US operates on the assumption of what is their national interest which is natural. they are bogged now right now in afghanistan, iraq, etc although they will be pulling out in the next few years since their focus is now on the pacific ocean area including the philippines., and we will be the beneficiary of this focus .

on our part, our leaders are showing the filipino mentality of acting at the last minute(natataranta na) , and now demanding the equipment right away lol.
The govt should have made this request for external defense equipment way back in 1995 when the modernization program was passed but they are doing this at the last minute. naghihintay na malapit na ang rapist at saka pa sumisigaw ng tulong :lollol:

whether the economy is doing bad or good, the govt really needs to set aside a bigger budget for defense, thats one of the hallmarks ao a truly independent and self-respecting nation that does not behave like a beggar. its our leaders that have been leading us badly in the past.

Lastly, among intelligence and national security analysts, its a known assumption that , countries with common borders with other neighboring countries will have disputes with those countries and hence neighboring cvountries with which we have overlapping disputes are allpotential enemies, e.g. malaysia, indonesia ,china. among this neighboring countries, china is the biggest concern because they want all the resources for themselves and this they have made increasingly clear as the years go by as they get stronger. they want all and they do not respect neighboring countries zones. thats the reality we are all facing now,

I wish the US Air Force will come back. The base will not just greatly enhance our defense but will speed up our own AFP modernization and the economy of the cities surrounding the facility.

MANILA - Doubts are swirling in the Philippines over whether the United States will live up to its promise to provide its military with the weaponry and equipment needed to stand up to China's aggressions in the South China Sea. The concerns arise as the two sides launch their annual joint naval exercises, held this year near the contested Spratly Islands.

http://www.atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/MG02Ae03.html :armyeek:

So indeed, the philippines are actually expecting the americans to immediately deliver those requested military hardwares. But some of the american politicians thought the philippines are rather unreliable ally. Then there was this reallocation of US military assistance in favor of Thailand, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

But how can us filipinos be reliable ally if these frakking corrupt generals kept stealing and misusing their military funds? There you go, and they wonder why the americans are now hesitant to help us? Oh well....

While Manila has already submitted its "wish list," including the urgent need for naval frigates, long-range fighter aircraft and a couple of submarines, it's still unclear whether the US will grant any of them.

In the face of that uncertainty, Manila has even mulled the idea of paying the US to lease patrol boats in a bid to expedite Washington's bureaucracy. However, US Navy Task Force commander Rear Admiral Tom Carney has said that the US is not in the business of leasing its patrol boats.

Maybe the americans would rather sell their Perry class frigates, and they wanted the AFP to go bigger and not going smaller with those cyclone class patrol boats! Cmon filipino officials, dont be too cheap!!!!

thats why in long term basis its still better to be self reliant than just depending on someone like the US, because times are changing including foreign policies change, If we still do not heed on this warnings then we are a lost cause.

It may be bullsh*t, but this is just the reality.

Of course, many of us would want to recognize Taiwan (the Republic of China) as the "one China" instead because it has a true democratic government, unlike the oppressive mainland People's Republic.

However, obviously Philippine, American and other countries' politicians prefer to recognize the mainland government because it has a larger economy and thus larger markets for foreign goods. That is another reason why the RP only has trade relations with the Taipei government, so as not to piss off Beijing; in fact the US embassy in Taipei is only called "the American Institute in Taiwan" to clarify its status as a quasi-official embassy and not anger Beijing. The Philippine embassy there is also called the Manila Trade Office (MTO).

Anyways, there is an older thread about Taiwan's situation and the "One-China Policy" at this other thread.
