Huwag na MiG29 fulcrum...even Algeria reject the Russian delivery of MiG29 to them. I rather choose the YAK130 Light Combat jet if we are goin to acquire Russian-made jets. or we just go for Israeli KFir jets or Korean A-50 Light Combat jet. |

This is better than not having one... :thumb: I'll go for the F-18 HORNET's than MiG 29's for the PAF, at least we can learn some tricks for two and support w/ the USN/ USAF. |

AFP to buy 2 F-18 Hornets for PAF; Hamilton class cutter for PN By Joel C. Atencio MANILA, June 20 (PNA) – The Philippine Air Force (PAF) is already scouting for at least two Mig-29 Fulcrum Fighter Jets or F-18 Hornets while the Philippine Navy (PN) is window shopping for state-of-the-art frigates as part of the modernization program of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), an AFP official said Monday. More of the article here. ----- key snippets from the said article:

AFP Modernization Program Management Office head Brig. Gen. Roy Deveraturda, said PAF and PN is getting the huge chunk with Malacanang increasing AFP's annual modernization budget from P5 billion to P8 billion which includes the intensive training of foot soldiers. Deveraturda said the acquisition is already up for the next five years priority list of the Aquino Administration. He added the procurement and bidding are also underway for the acquisition of weaponry and logistics. He also said the military upgrade should not be viewed as preparations for a possible conflict over the disputed Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea. “We just want to provide sovereign presence in our territories,” Deveraturda told reporters. AFP’s priorities were fighter jets, patrol helicopters with sensors, search-and-rescue helicopters, transport aircraft, and strategic sea-lift vessels, Deveraturda said. “We plan to acquire a brand-new Hamilton class cutter for our Coast Guard,” he said. http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=&sid=&nid=&rid=353876 ____________ can you spot the difference? But Gen. Roy Deveraturda, head of the Armed Forces Modernization Program Management Office, said the military upgrade should not be viewed as preparations for a possible conflict over the disputed Spratly Islands in the West Philippine Sea. “We just want to provide sovereign presence in our territories,” Deveraturda said. “In any conflict scenario, equipment is just one factor, but we have to be clear about this upgrade. This is not being done in preparation for any conflict. It is not like we are going for an all-out war.” The Armed Forces’ priorities were patrol helicopters with sensors, search-and-rescue helicopters, transport aircraft, and strategic sea-lift vessels, Deveraturda said. “We are also planning to acquire a brand-new Hamilton class cutter for our Coast Guard,” he said. http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/insideN...&d=2011/june/20 ___________________________________ confused but my question is how many times media people interviewed Gen. Roy..just asking? I hope the reports are true .. :thumb: |

I'd rather go for the YAK130 since it covers the long-term plan for getting the MRF platform. The YAK130 is good enough. The F18 Hornet would be a good buy as well in since it is a battle-tested warbird already. If the choice ends up with F18 and MIG29, the F18 would be the better choice. If funds will allow, we get 7-jet squadron of F18 to fill in the gap and as our interim fighter. Augmenting the fleet is the YAK130 platform. This is for a long-term planning. This will prepare the pilots for the eventual MRF like the JAS39 or the newer version of F16 or the Sukkhois. |

should this news item is true, i hope that the PAF is not just limiting its options to the F/A-18 and the MiG-29. i believe that the F-16, the JAS 39 Gripen, the Mirage 2000 and the Kfir are worth looking at. even extensively upgraded F-5E/Fs similar to the ones that the Brazilians have might even serve well as a credible deterrent. as for the "state-of-the-art frigates" that the PN is "window shopping" for, i wonder what naval vessel types are they particularly looking at now. |

The likely reason the news mentions only two F-18s is that only two will be ordered at a time. in other words the MRFs will be ordered on a staggered basis. example - two F-18s per year or every two years. Mahal kasi kaya pira-piraso ang order sa sari-sari store. |
