You did not find this yourself. As matter of respect for the Timawan who pointed this development out, cite him as a reference. His handle is right next to the link you copied. Note, I merely posted on his behalf. |

So they are looking for 19 OPV to be built in a philippine shipyard? That's a lot. |

this document is a very welcome development to everyone. at least, the PN has clearly specified the things that it wanted to see on future OPVs. ![]() well anyway, is any American shipbuilder still interested in marketing OPVs and the like? it seems to me that they are more into the building of destroyers, aircraft carriers, LHDs and nuclear subs compared to OPVs and similar vessels. correct me if i am wrong but the last "OPV-sized" ship that the Americans built was the Israeli Sa'ar 5 class corvettes, which were built by Ingalls Shipbuilding (now a part of Northrop Grumman Ship Systems). i would be surprised if ever the names Blohm and Voss, BAE Systems, DCNS, CMN Group, Fincantieri, Navantia, Hyundai Heavy Industries, STX, Hanjin, and China State Shipbuilding Corporation will appear as possible interested parties for this particular tender. it will be interesting to see how things will turn out later on.

These 80 meter OPVs are also equipped with ASW, and the US is not building anymore destroyers. The word "Destroyers" were used during WWII and were designed to destroy submarines, while the british have these "frigates" that have similar capabilities. But MOST of the US modern AEGIS cruisers, missile corvettes, frigates, and other 80 meter or more OPV's are the modern "destroyers" because they are equipped with ASW but they dont use such name anymore. |

based on what we read in the media, the total OPV requirement is for 2 OPVs programmed for 2012 to 2016 for which there is a budget of 7 billion or 3.5 billion pesos each - roughly 78 million dollars each at exchange rate of 45 pesos. So what 80 meter long OPV candidates are out there for 78 million dollars each ???? an AFP official said that the multi-year budgeting now in effect will mean the AFP now has budget for big projects and that this will be the capital that local shipyards need , therefore , the need for loans is not necessary unlike before when foreign companies would dangle the lure of credit facility. There is a big push for locallyconstructed ships - you will see this come out in next year's maritime conference/exhibit in manila. if this happens the foreign participation will be limited to design and consultation at the least and/or construction of 1st OPV abroad but 2nd OPV will be built locally or even both OPVs locally. |
