For war and disasters because most of the time they will fly their wounded soldiers from Mindanao straight to the V. Luna AFP general hospital by helicopter. I remember during my PMA physical and medical exams in 1998, there were like 2-3 helicopters a day that will visit that hospital to deliver wounded soldiers from the frontlines as what one of the patient soldiers there told me.

If you want to see the horrors of war without going to Mindanao, try visiting our wounded soldiers in V. Luna and I tell you will have sleepless nights. I think that is one of the good reasons why the PMA does their medical and physical exams in V. Luna, to test the cadet candidates' psychological capacity.

My grandma once worked there in V. Luna as an army dentist when my grandpa was still in the army, that's why the veteran dentists there during my physical and medical exams quickly noticed my name. It was a shame though because I had so many denture problems back then because they joked "You're the grandson of a dentist and you have tooth problems?".

Anyway, this hospital ship is a great need for our soldiers who are fighting in Mindanao. Time is of an essence, you can save more lives if you have a hospital ship with complete medical and surgical equipment and can carry helicopters near the war zone than travelling over long distances to find a suitable hospital to cure these wounded soldiers because most of the time these wounded soldiers expire during travel... they die with their curable wounds! How sad

The AFP doesn't have any hospital ship yet. What Kfir was saying was that normally the wounded soldiers are transported from the frontline to the V. Luna hospital which is in Quezon City. Imagine the time it took to travel from Mindanao to Quezon City by chopper. Time is of the essence for the wounded.

So having a naval hospital ship will greatly help our soldiers in times of conflict as they can be stationed or dock at the nearest shore.

So that means BRP Pagasa has violated that rule because it is an armed hospital and rescue ship! Well for security and defense purposes of a hospital ship, I think it can carry armed guards equipped with high caliber weapons or it should be escorted by a warship?

Well did it had red cross on it? if so then yes but as far as i know hospital ship carrying a red cross emblem show not be armed but i know that BRP Ang Pagasa is a multipurpose ship not a hospital ship if am not mistaken.

Does the military has to own and operate a hospital ship or their coast guard will do?

I think we should leave it to the coast guard.

MRV is for the military. Just my opinion.

Not the red cross emblem but the red cross flag which it hoists whenever it will be doing hospital ship duties. If it will be used by the president for transport, then they will hoist the president's flag.

@ Spearhead: the US Navy, Royal Navy, Russian Navy, Brazilian Navy, and Australian Navy (to name a few navies) operates its own hospital ships. The Coast Guard is more on maritime police work and search & rescue.

Lately, current events around the world show that conventional military force is less relevant, especially when using counter-insurgency strategies, and more battles are won through hearts and minds.

Considering the laid back approach, upcoming future acquisitions like more WHECs and MRFs? :dunno: and more Announcements lang.. Maybe they should really give priority to acquire a NAVAL HOSPITAL , Because they might need it BADLY.... :sad2:

Thanks for the info kfir.

AVB, i think the MRV will do for now. Maybe next time kapag naisip ng gobyerno yang hospital ship, by converting one of those passenger ships. PEro dapat yung passenger ship na di madaling lumubog otherwise imagine nalang whats the worst could happen.
