The reason LCUs and LSTs are heavy at the rear is because the superstructure and engines/machinery are at the rear. . The advantage of the rear being heavy is to compensate for the load(vehicles and soldiers) that will be carried in the front of the vessel. Another advantage/reason is this is by design to enable the LCU to land on beaches which have angled gradients suited to the "rear-heavy" design of LCUs/LSTs. What is of more concern is whether the superstructure is "too tall" or not. if it is too tall or "top heavy" then the ship will roll even more from side to side in rough seas.
