Calls to abolish PMA mount By Artemio Dumlao (The Philippine Star) Updated February 09, 2011 12:00 AM Comments (82) BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Calls for the abolition of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) are mounting even as the institution gets ready to celebrate its foundation day over the weekend here. Reviving a call by Surigao del Sur Rep. Philip Pichay last November to divide the military institution into major command academies, Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Teodoro Casiño is calling for a review of Asia’s premier military academy. On the heels of controversy surrounding the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Casiño said that abolition of the PMA should be considered. The PMA is preparing for the alumni homecoming from Friday to Sunday where Marcelo Navarro Jr. of Class ’72 will receive an award for public administration; Cornelio de la Cruz, Class ’78, for Special Affairs; Restituto Aguilar, Class ’78, for Alumni Affairs; Alexander Fama, Class ’79, for Command and Administration; Alex Pura, Class ’89, for Army Operations; Nicole Dris, Class ’89, for Naval Operations; Leo Francisco, Class ’92, for Police Operations; and Justino Ramolete, Class ’99, for Air Force Operations. PMA class of 1961, the host of this year’s homecoming, is also celebrating its golden anniversary. Also celebrating their jubilees are members of class 1986 (silver) ; class 2006 for their first five years, class 2001 for 10 years, and class 1991 for 20 years. Casiño said the core of the PMA should be reviewed, as top men in the force are graduates of the academy. This comes in the wake of revelations linking some of its graduates to plunder and misuse of funds in the AFP. “There is something wrong with the values system, training as we see in the graduates that we have now,” Casiño said. Casiño said the PMA spends more money for cadets than the country does for state scholars, “This is not a good investment.” The PMA spends over P2 million for every cadet. Casiño said major reforms should be set in place in the PMA. PMA Superintendent Leonardo Calderon said moves to abolish the academy are farfetched, insisting that military adventurism was being addressed by instilling in cadets a love for the Constitution and country through the PMA roadmap, crafted to fine-tune existing guidelines in the academy. http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?artic...ubCategoryId=63 |

I pray that my son will have the privilege of knowing what PMA stands for. I hope that calls for the abolition of my alma mater does not materialize. It will be a sorry day for the nation if that ever happens. Men who graduated from the PMA are just that, only human, weak and prone to make mistakes but are thrust upon situations that force them to become larger than life models of courage, integrity and loyalty. Those who fail to live up to these ideals do not define what a pma graduate is, for by their actions, and their failures, they have ceased to be pmaers, but rather have become ordinary scum. And honorable pmaers will be the first to condemn their actions. |

I totally agree with you that PMAyers should be the first one to condemn those wayward ones but most of all emulate the acts of Col. Rabusa which is by far the most laudable. He come clean after admitting his involvement and tell all without prejudice of including him in the case. As I have opined in my previous posts that closing the PMA is not the right direction to maintain good products to run the AFP. The cleansing should start from the AFP itself so that we can pick out the good and trusted men to run the PMA. The future and integrity of the PMA is in tandem with the AFP. However, I am quite convinced that the academy should be stopped from being a free institution. |

Who are the PMAers who openly condemned their mistahs? What I read from the news are statements from this particular class supporting its embattled classmate. Even the PMAAAI is mostly silent or issuing generic fence-sitting statements. |

When grads condemn corruption, whether civilian or military, you call them coup plotters and military adventurists. If they do not, you say they are fence sitters. Tell me now, should we interfere with democratic processes or should we let due process run its course? |

Courtesy of iceman: When will people stop being immature? Blaming PMA for the actions of its graduates once they leave the portals of their alma mater is a stupid proposition. Requiring current cadets to pay for the mistakes of some cavaliers is even more stupid. If we are to let ourselves be convinced by this arguments, then let us abolish PMA. Carrying on this line of thinking, let us abolish UP for producing Marcos and Ver. Let us abolish all the other schools whose alumni were involved in scandals. Extending the logic further, let us dissolve the Roman Catholic Church because of the Inquisition, the Crusades, the Witch hunts, the sex perverted bishops and priests. Let us even dissolve our nation dahil mga Filipino naman si Macoy, si Ver, si Gen Garcia, si Gringo, silang lahat, Filipino naman eh. And what about the poor students who really wish to enter the PMA due to their desire to serve the country? Do we deny them that chance because they can not pay the tuition fee? And are you serious in insinuating that poor cadets, once they graduate are more likely to become corrupt due to their poverty? I do hope you are not out of your mind, because in effect, you are saying that poor people are inherently corrupt or inclined to be corrupt and dishonest. I do know a lot of people, Filipinos, who would rather be slaves here or in other countries rather than steal or be corrupt. There are a lot of Filipinos who take pride in the dignity of honest work and would never ever stoop to dishonesty. Compare that to rich people who can't stop being too greedy and abusing their influence to get what they want. Kahit maraming maghirap or masagasaan, basta sila, yumaman pa lalo. Even Anthony Taberna of ABS-CBN has similar opinion. It was aired on Iba Balita February 8, 2011. |

Would you be proud to announce to the whole world that you have a whore as a sister? Certainly not, but you would take some efforts to talk to her and try to reform her without the preying eyes of your neighbors? I guess you would! Hope you get my analogy! |
