Bomb squad training gets too realistic

MANILA, Philippines—Bomb squad training for Philippine police became a little too realistic when a grenade went off during a lecture, injuring six officers, an official said Saturday.

An instructor was teaching other officers how to handle explosive devices such as land mines and home-made bombs when the accident occurred Thursday on the southern island of Mindanao, said police spokesman Christian Carlitos.

"The instructor was demonstrating how to defuse a grenade when he accidentally pulled the safety pin," said Carlitos.

The grenade exploded, injuring the instructor and five of his students. They were sent to hospital but had escaped severe injury, police said.

Communist insurgents, Muslim separatists and extortion gangs in the Philippines have all been known to use improvised explosives such as land mines and bombs.

The accident happened in Napolcom Regional Training Academy 10 based in Patag,
Cagayan de Oro City. I was an instructor in Criminal Law and Crime Scene Investigation there for almost 4 years in the late 80's 1982 -1986. The explosive handling instructor at that time in the academy was an officer from the army. I remembered in one occasion that the instructor smelt alcohol when I met him in the corridor going to the classroom. I called up the Academy Commandant and told him to confront the Explosive handling instructor. It was after that incident that the trainees complained that sometimes the instructor shows off some dangerous stunt when he handles a live grenade grenade thus bringing the class into a heart pounding atmosphere.

We just hope that this incident was purely an accident of course the attendant circumstances of negligence cannot be ruled out better than a scenario of plain stupidity of showing off.

Lucky no one got killed. Painful lesson for them to be extra careful next time.

Speedy recovery to the wounded.
