By Abigail Kwok INQUIRER.net First Posted 13:27:00 12/15/2010 Filed Under: Police, Firearms MANILA, Philippines – In a bid to improve its system of gathering evidence, the Philippine National Police on Wednesday unveiled a modern equipment designed to improve the national police force's ballistics identification procedures. The P137 million Integrated Ballistics Identification System (IBIS) can effectively capture, store, and correlate all bullet slugs that were gathered during the course of police investigation. IBIS also serves as a database of all licensed firearms, so the PNP can easily identify erring licensed gun owners using modern technology. "IBIS uses sophisticated electronic and digital technology to classify evidence," said Chief Superintendent Vic Caragan, Director of the PNP Crime Lab. "This will be significant in reducing extrajudicial killings, assassinations and indiscriminate firing," he added. The IBIS consists of three phases, the first of which includes a BulletTRAX-3D that can scan digital images of bullets, a BrassTRAX-3D that can scan bullet cartridges, and other equipment that will allow authorities to easily search and correlate firearms. According to the PNP Crime Lab, this new technology effectively reduces the time it takes for authorities to scour through its database of 1.3 million licensed gun holders from 13 years to two hours. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/...cs-ID-equipment |
