I went to the Philippines about a month ago. When I went to the embassy to check in, I was awestruck with the presence of heavily armed PNP-SAF personnel around the compound. This was before the elevated terror warning within the country. Parked on the sidewalk was an armored humvee armed with a pintle mounted heavy machine gun locked and loaded. As I walked through inside, armed SAF troopers were standing around outside the gate and fence-line.
This bothered me because it felt like an active warzone along Roxas Blvd. As an American, it was an obtrusive and unnecessary representation of the "Land of the Free". Nevertheless, knowing that many PNP officials are undisciplined, there was a bit of concern. Kidding around, maybe it was to keep away MMDA personnel from collecting their lunch money from unsuspecting American drivers and tourists.
A couple of days ago, the PNP discovered a 40mm grenade and a baseball grenade in the vicinity of the embassy. I believe it's from one of the PNP personnel assigned to the area. The PNP personnel would be better utilized patroling crime ridden areas of the Metro Area or the country.

Yep, those PNP-SAF are better off in other places. But have you ever thought of the enemies of the great U.S.A.? If they could not hit you in your own turf, they'll hit you in places where you are off-guard. The Embassy is the symbol of the US and it is an extension of the "Land of the Free". It's a usual target for terrorism. Imagine the problem and pressure the host country will encounter. If you go about a block away you may even see a platoon of cops on standby for any lightning demonstrations by Anti- U.S. activists. :drunk:

Thanks Saver, but the SAF in full camouflage battle gear in my opinion is overkill. The embassy is already guarded by private contractors and conventionally uniformed police officers. It's kinda like a zoo, with people stepping all over each other.
