ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines – (UPDATE 2) Two pilots were still missing, as of Tuesday evening, while three Philippine Navy personnel were rescued when a helicopter crashed off the seas of Great Santa Cruz Island here in the morning.

Rear Admiral Alexander Pama, the Naval Forces Western Mindanao commander, said the Volco helicopter crashed while performing its “routine session flight and documentation."

The three survivors were identified as Petty Officers 3 Abdon Martinez, Noel Ridad and Rodolfo Pataweg.

“They are recuperating. They have some injuries but they are stable," Pama said.

The two missing pilots were identified only as Lieutenants Corpuz and Tamayo. (Reports from Manila have identified them as First Lieutenant Cristan Corpuz and First Lieutenant Gerald Tamayo.)

"They are still unaccounted for," Lt. Gen Ben Dolorfino, the Western Mindanao Command chief, said.

Pama said the Public Affairs Office of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao, led by Patewag, was conducting documentation of an ongoing Amphibious Small Boat exercise by members of the Special Operations unit such as the Navy Seals in the area, when the accident happened.

"They were taking aerial photos and videos, and according to our special operation units that conducted the search and rescue operation, there was an indication of engine trouble but it’s too early to speculate," Pama said.

Pama said parts of the rotor have been recovered from the crash site, "and we are doing our best to locate the two pilots as they could have drifted away and we will never stop until they are located and the helicopter is lifted."

The rip current in the crash area is very strong according to one of the divers I know and could have dragged the pilots out to sea, far from the vicinity of the wreckage.

That's for the PN to install on their remaining helicopters.

Naval helos should really have those flotation devices.

ZAMBOANGA City, Philippines - A Philippine Navy official still hopes that the 2 missing pilots of the ill-fated Bolkow helicopter are still alive.

Rear Admiral Alex Pama, commander of the Naval Forces Western Mindanao, said that Navy choppers have already taken underwater images of the Bolkow chopper that crashed in waters off Zamboanga City Tuesday morning.

Pama said that based on the underwater images, the chopper was intact and there were signs that the 2 pilots were able to eject from the aircraft before it crashed between the Great Santa Cruz and Little Santa Cruz islands.
