MANILA, Philippines - A Philippine Navy Bolkow helicopter PNH411 crashed in the sea between Great Santa Cruz and Little Santa Cruz islands near Zamboanga City around 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Navy spokesman Lt. Col. Edgard Arevalo said the helicopter had 2 pilots, a crew member and 2 passengers on board.

The 2 passengers and crew member identified as PO2 Rodolfo Pataueg, PO2 Noel Ridad and PO2 Abdon Martinez have been rescued and are now safe at Camp Navarro Gen Hospital.

Navy divers are still searching for the two pilots.

The passengers escaped but the pilots apparently tried to maintain control of the aircraft to the end, perhaps to avoid endangering units involved in the exercise. Heroes. :salute:

Navy chopper crash along Zamboanga Peninsula

By JOHN CARLO CAHINHINAN
August 17, 2010, 4:40pm
Joint elements of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and the Philippine Navy are conducting a search and rescue operations after a Navy helicopter crashed along Zamboanga Peninsula on Tuesday morning.

Commodore Rodolfo Isorena, PCG-Zamboanga District Commander, said that about 10:45 a.m. on Tuesday their counterpart in the Navy requested for an immediate assistance after PN-Helo chopper (PNH411) crashed somewhere along Great Santa Cruz and Little Santa Cruz Islands around 10:30 a.m. the same day.

Isorena immediately advised Commander Artermio Abu, commanding officer of the PCG search and rescue vessel (SAR) BRP-Edsa Dos (SARV-002), to dispatch rescue divers onboard two rubber boats along the crash site. The said SAR vessel carrying members of the PCG Special Operations Group (SOG) divers is currently participating in the Joint Special Operations Task Force Philippines (JSOTFP) with US Troops and Philippine Navy personnel along Caldera Bay in Zamboanga City.

As of 2:30 p.m., Admiral Wilfredo Tamayo, PCG Commandant, halted the joint training and ordered Commander Abu to assist the Navy in the ongoing operations. The said SAR vessel also lent some of their rescue rubber boats to the Navy to intensify the search and rescue efforts.

Isorena said that three of the five passengers, identified as Petty Officer Second Class Rodolfo Patueg, Petty Officer Second Class Noel Ridad and Petty Officer Second Class Abdon Martirez were already rescued by combined of elements of the Navy and the Coast Guard, while the two pilots identified as a certain Lieutenant Corpuz and and Lieutenant Tamayo were still missing.
