MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – Ivan Padilla, leader of the notorious Padilla carnapping syndicate, was killed after a shootout with authorities in Makati City Monday morning.

Padilla was arrested by operatives of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Anti-Carnapping group at 3 a.m. after authorities received a tip that Padilla was poised to strike again in Makati.

Padilla was wounded after engaging arresting agents in an encounter. Police said Padilla opened fire after refusing to alight from his Toyota Vios.

The car theft gang leader was then taken to the Ospital ng Makati for treatment where he died.

Last week, two members of the Padilla group were arrested following the recovery of the vehicles of former Ambassador Roberto Romulo and the father of actor Derek Ramsay.

They were Dale Alemagno and Glen del Castillo. – With reports from ANC and Gretchen Malalad, ABS-CBN News

Scratch another bad guy. One of his victims is a close relative they beat black and blue before they took away his new Mazda 6.

Good job cops! :thumb:

Job will done. But as yet I can't say it's meritorious until the cops involved are exculpated from the suspicion of summary execution in the following investigation. We cannot conclude that he was murdered because of his failure to share the cops the spoils of his crime until the facts are proven. Speculations are not the basis for conviction except in the auspices of kangaroo justice.

MANILA, Philippines - The carnapping case involving Ivan Padilla is not yet closed as 6 of the gang's members are still at-large, Director Roberto Rosales of the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) said in a press briefing on Monday.

Earlier, Padilla was killed in an early morning police operation in Makati while riding a carnapped Toyota Vios.

The police found a .38 and .22 caliber pistols and a grenade in Padilla’s possession after the shoot-out. His companion was not harmed but was taken into custody.

According to Rosales, the broadcasting of Padilla’s identity resulted in numerous sightings since Friday last week until the eventual face-off in Makati.

Just wanted to add this to the previous post above.

"Rosales also reported tightening its investigation to catch “fixers” in the Land Transportation Office (LTO), who have been registering the carnapped vehicles from Padilla’s group"

It looks like its a widely distributed gang at all echelons. Bet the fall out was from the last car jacking of the foreign couple where the couple claimed that there was 2 million in their van and it perked up some antennas... Bet also that this gang is operating with the collusion of the airport scanning or handling committee.... just my own opinions thought...

These annoying fixers already existed since I was not yet born from the defunct LTC (Land Transportation Commission). Heads or chiefs of LTO agencies nationwide cannot turn their backs from these fixers because they (fixers ) are their behind-the-curtain subordinates in their money-making scheme in the LTO office or local agency. In the terminology and slang of criminals, they are the "pantalla" (screen) to camouflage their "ripping off" activities on clients who seek their services by charging them even ten folds the amount of the required fees. The lion share goes to the boss of the LTO agency concerned and the loose change goes to the employees down the line. :headbang:

Metro Manila anti-carjacking unit suspended

MANILA, Philippines - Operations of a 12-man anti-carjacking unit in Metro Manila were suspended Monday due to suspected foul play over the death of carjacking syndicate leader Ivan Padilla.

Metro Manila police chief Director Leocadio Santiago said the Philippine National Police Internal Affairs Service is investigating 12 members of the National Capital Region Police Office Anti-Carnapping Unit for the death of Ivan Padilla, leader of the notorious Padilla carnapping syndicate, last August 2.

Santiago said the special anti-carjacking unit will remain inactive until the investigation is finished. He said the unit could be mobilized during emergency operations.

He added that anti-carjacking operations are conducted by police at the district level.

The Commission on Human Rights is investigating Padilla's death after an autopsy report showed that the gangleader died of "asphyxia as a result of blunt force to the throat."

A forensic pathologist has disputed police claims that Padilla died after breaking a neck bone in a car accident as he was trying to evade arrest in Makati. “You don't really say blunt force to the throat. Go direct to the point. Is this asphyxia due to strangulation?" said Dr. Raquel Fortun, a forensic pathologist.

Fortun said Padilla died of a fractured hyoid bone, a bone in the neck that supports the tongue.

"Apparently, meron pressure sa neck. Halimbawa ay sinakal sa pamamagitan ng kamay. Or, meron kang tali na ginamit mong pangsakal," she said.

After the car accident, Padilla also sustained two gunshot wounds in the head, both of which were ruled out by the PNP autopsy as being the cause of Padilla’s death. He also had scratches on the arm and neck.
