U.S. to start implementing "precision" missiles in Philippines

(philstar.com) Updated July 30, 2010 05:40 PM Comments (1)

MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) -- The United States has started implementing a program aiming to prove the precision capability of Philippine military aircraft and help the country in its fight against terrorist groups and other armed groups, the Philippine defense department said today.

"It's a program for the enhancement of the precision capabilities of the aircraft that is supporting our ground troops in the South. So the equipment that will be provided will be basically some software and other equipment which will allow us to perform this enhanced precision capability for the Air Force basically," Department of National Defense spokesman Eduardo Batac.

The 4 million U.S.-dollar project, inclusive of softwares, will be installed to OV-10 planes used by the military in dropping bombs and firing rockets at enemy positions.

The Philippine air force currently has OV10s although only 10 are operational. Batac stopped short of saying how many aircraft will be equipped with the system.

But once completed, Batac said, the [b/aircraft equipped with enhanced precision capabilities can deliver munitions on the enemy even when there is limited visibility [/b]

my fearless forecast OV-10s are being prepared for Hellfires :pistols:

based on the AFP budget and realities on the ground, i believe this refers to the latest version of the 2.75 inch rocket which is now a precision rocket plus its much cheaper than the hellfire.

the hellfire is $100,000 while this new precision 2.75 inch rocket known as the baby hellfire: is about $1,500 only. other estimates say the rocket is $10,000 , still cheaper than the hellfire.

however, if its free, then yes its possible that it can be bigger hellfire , etc.

What precision rockets will they give to us when the fact is even they don't have yet these rockets?

Question is, if Hellfires are a destination, is that the next step or are there stops we need to make along the way to get there?

There's a discussion somewhere here about the Israeli's LAHAT Guidance system kit wherein 2.75" rockets like what we use can be upgraded.

Lots of steps, costly and complicated steps both in platform modification/upgrading and crew training.

I'm rethinking my initial spur of the moment guess that these are Hellfires. I'm now more inclined on Tora's earlier suggestion of precision munitions for arty and GPS guided bombs for existing PAF A/C bec these weapons entail much lesser steps towards operational capability compared to Hellfire.

Interesting, yes, but development cost would probably eat most, if not all, of the $18 million alloted.

But if you look at the technology it's applicable to 105 and 120mm guns and even the 106 recoilles rifles of which we have in our arsenal. More precision shooting!

And one more thing

IAI has recently completed a successful series of test firing on the Arjun tank in India, and is negotiating local production if a planned procurement of Lahat for the entire Arjun fleet planned for the Indian Armor will materialize.

Exactly why I changed my mind as regards the Hellfire.

But since the funds are provided by the US then we should assume that it will be US-made precision munitions and not the Lahat.

Now the question is, what are these?

the quickest way to arrive to the Hellfire destination is through the Predator.

all the US have to do is give us 4 Predators along with Hellfires

easier and faster than modifying and upgrading PAF aircraft.

oh my sofie!
