Oil leak spotted on naval ship in Sangley Point

An oil leak was spotted from a Philippine Navy ship while it is docked along the Sangley Point Naval Base in Cavite City.

A source from the Philippine Coast Guard told the Manila Bulletin that a Navy official assigned in Sangley Point has requested for assistance after noticing that one of its vessels identified as Landing Ship Carrier-506 (LST-506) might have been damaged during the height of typhoon Basyang last week.

The vessel was a vintage World War II carrier which is still active in the service.

Based on investigation made by the PCG, the Navy vessel was docked when giant waves combined with strong winds slammed into the ship last week.

“I have heard that the PCG has already sent four Maritime Environment Pollution Command (MEPCOM) personnel and leased our oil spill boom and sorbent pads to them. Our MEPCOM people would collect the oil that floats to the surface,” the Coast Guard official said.

The official added that the vessel is currently on a partially submerged position.

Possibly a media error because I also read that it is docked in Sangley Point to undergo scrapping process. I also read that the leaking oil came from the pipes that were not dried or cleaned yet from oil residue.
