MANILA, Philippines – The Quezon City Police District has directed its personnel to attend a seminar on sign language to improve their investigative skills particularly in cases involving deaf and mute persons.

Chief Superintendent Benjardi Mantele, QPCD director, said 20 QCPD operatives recently finished a two-month training program on sign language sponsored by the Rotary Club of Quezon City. These policemen will, in turn, teach their colleagues in using and understanding sign language.

“There were incidents before wherein our policemen had a hard time understanding deaf and mute victims,” Mantele said during the weekly forum “Talakayan Sa Isyung Pulis” at Camp Crame. “With this program, we hope we could better serve and help them.”

Mantele said he also ordered all the 12 police stations in Quezon City to come up with a monthly report on the number of deaf and mute persons who seek police assistance.
