PMA valedictorian to mistahs: Protect Constitution, people
03/01/2010 | 10:20 PM

FORT DEL PILAR, BAGUIO CITY – Become the vanguards of the Constitution and the protectors of the Filipino people.

This was the message of Erano Belen, who on Monday graduated valedictorian of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Masidlak" class of 2010, to his mistahs.

“If challenges come along our way, we must face these challenges objectively. We must stand firm to our mandate to serve and protect the Filipino people. Together, we dedicate our lives as vanguards of the Constitution and builders of peaceful nation," he said in his valedictory address.

He reminded his 225 classmates that alongside accomplishments and milestones are “duties and responsibilities to fulfill."

“Graduating in the academy is one thing, but building a reputation is another," Belen said, quoting Senior Superintendent Manuel Gaerland, a member of PMA class 1985.

“As we leave the portals of the academy and enter the real world, we must not leave behind the values and ideas that our alma mater has taught us. The values of courage, integrity and loyalty may not only be designs on our rampart and bullrings but instead our very own core values as we move forward as officers of the Armed Forces of the Philippines," he added.

After his address, the members of the class were commissioned as second lieutenants and ensigns of the military by Defense Secretary Norberto Gonzales. Armed Forces chief Gen. Victor Ibrado then presided the oath-taking of the new junior officers.

Belen and 44 other members of the class will be joining the Air Force, while 122 will be with the Philippine Army and 59 will be with the Navy and its subordinate unit, the Philippine Marines.

This year’s batch of graduates is composed of 195 males and 31 females. One of the female graduates, Karen Nuevas Padayao of Ormoc City, ranked 9th in the class.

The other members of the Top 10 are Froillan Jick Pinay-an of Ifugao (No. 2), Nolito Ong Ebal of Misamis Oriental (No. 3), Johnson Revesa Gonzales of Camarines Sur (No. 4), Jacob Jorge Avila of Baguio City (No. 5), Joel delos Santos of Tacloban City (No. 6), Erwin Ramos Villanueva of Cavite (No. 7), Alfie Pancho Agarao of Iloilo (No. 8) and Ric Ivan Cordero Joven of South Cotabato (No. 10).

Belen, , a son of a tricycle driver from Dumaguete City, received from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyothe Presidential Saber for topping the class and the Philippine Air Force saber for being the top graduate to join the Air Force.

Meanwhile, Pinay-an received the Vice Presidential Saber for finishing second in the class and the Philippine Army saber for being the top graduate to join the Army. Ebal got the Secretary of National Defense saber for finishing third while Gonzales got the Philippine Navy award for being top graduate to join the Navy.

Alfonso Magno Irriberi received the PGMA Achievement Award for Leadership and the Chief of Staff Saber Award for serving as the brigade commander of the cadet corps. - KBK, GMANews.TV

This PMA Class 2010 topnotcher hopes to show the world the goodness of the Filipino soldier…

When he was a boy, Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class 2010 topnotcher Cadet First Class Eraño Bontilao Belen thought the future was all bleak and uncertain.

As a child, he studied under a gas lamp because there was no electricity in their house. It went without saying that later on, he would work while studying because he had dreams he was bent on pursuing. Yet amid a hard life, Eraño managed to excel in school as a scholar and consistent honor student until college.

Last Monday, all those hardships seemed far, far behind as Eraño, the 23-year-old son of a tricycle driver and a manicurist from Dumaguete, graduated at the top of the PMA Masidlak Class and received the Presidential Saber from President Arroyo, the highest honor given to a PMA graduate, at graduation rites held in Fort Del Pilar, Baguio City.

Eraño was also the recipient of the Philippine Air Force Saber, Academic Group Award, Natural Sciences plaque, Air Force Professional course plaque, Joint United States Military Advisory Group (JUSMAG) award, Association of Generals and Flag Officers award, and Australian defense best overall performance award.

BRILLIANT STUDENT

Poverty notwithstanding, Eraño excelled at the Dumaguete Science High School. A quiet achiever, he never told his parents about his feat as he quietly performed his academic and domestic duties.

In college, Eraño took up Bachelor of Science in Electronics and Communications Engineering (ECE) at the Negros Oriental State University. In the morning, he would work as an errand boy at a law firm, while at night, he would go to his classes or to the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) chapel where he was also taking up preparatory courses for a Bachelor’s degree in Evangelical Ministry.

Eraño, named after Bro. Eraño Manalo, the late INC executive minister and founder, wanted to become an INC minister. But they did not have enough money to support this dream, nor continue a college course. A career in the military then became the next plausible thing to do.

“I was attracted to the holistic education that PMA offers. Hindi puro technical but also includes socio-humanistic subjects, how to deal with people. Kaya mga graduates ng PMA are well-rounded individuals,” relates Eraño.

COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT

On the first three months at the Academy, when many cadets who cannot endure the grueling physical, mental and emotional training usually quit, Eraño forced himself not to give up – all because of the girls!

“Napabilang ako sa squad na maraming babae, we had 31 women cadets in my class. At nakita ko na nakakayanan ng mga babae. Nakahiya naman na hindi ko kayanin kasi kung sila nga nagawa nila. I motivated myself to finish it kasi inisip ko nakakahiyang umuwi sa amin at malaman nila na sumuko ako,” he reveals.

He slept less and studied more. Apart from the 7 to 9:30 p.m. designated time for studying, he would be up before the 5 a.m. wake-up call to finish his lessons. “Sa PMA hindi lang puro academics, may physical training at character formation din na halos sabay-sabay mong ginagawa. My advantage is the training I got when I was a working student.

Eraño adds that his friendship with his fellow squad members also played a big role in his stay at the Academy.

“Nagtutulungan kami ng mga mistah ko sa lahat ng mga bagay, sa sharing of knowledge, memorization, pati na sa pagtahi ng uniforms namin,” shares Eraño who heads the Christian Brotherhood International (CBI)-PMA chapter. CBI is the youth organization of INC. He is also a member of the PMA Boxing Corps Squad.

ONE DAY AT A TIME

The very challenging environment inside the Academy teaches the cadets to take one day at a time. Surviving a full day of hard work, after all, is already a major feat.

“Live one day at a time. First day palang namin, ito na palagi ang sinasabi sa amin. I also learned to discipline myself, to be always at my best kahit kulang ng pahinga, and to keep a positive mental attitude at all times,” he reveals.

Eraño intends to carry this positive trait with him, especially when he sets out to conquer his fear of heights by serving as a Philippine Air Force pilot.

By his own example, Eraño hopes to further improve the image of the military and show the goodness of a soldier.

“Honor, excellence, love for God and country. With these in mind, I hope to be the kind of soldier that my people need,” concludes Eraño.
