US, Philippine navies to train near disputed waters
The United States and the Philippines said Friday they would hold joint naval exercises next week in waters close to disputed areas of the South China Sea.
Eleven days of manoeuvres will start Tuesday, after a pledge by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday that Washington was ready to provide hardware to the Filipino military amid rising tension at sea with China.
The guided missile destroyers USS Chung-Hoon and USS Howard and the diving and salvage ship USNS Safeguard will arrive Tuesday at the western Philippine island of Palawan, a joint statement said.
"The US and Philippine navies have a long history of working together, and exercises like (these) provide a great venue for us to hone our skills and increase our inter-operability," the US commander Captain David Welch said.
The exercises will be held in the Palawan area, the joint naval statement said, without specifying where.
Palawan's west coast faces the South China Sea, where tensions over the resource-rich area have been escalating, with the Philippines and Vietnam alarmed at what they say are increasingly aggressive actions by Beijing.
China, the Philippines and Vietnam, along with Brunei, Malaysia and Taiwan, lay claim to all or parts of the Spratlys, a South China Sea island chain close to Palawan.
The statement said the drills aim to hone maritime security capabilities in interdiction, information sharing, combined operations, patrol operations and gunnery, along with anti-piracy and anti-smuggling know-how.
The US navy holds similar regular bilateral exercises, called Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training, with the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand, the statement said.
Vietnam also takes part in a similar event known as Naval Exchange Activity, it said.

Palawan oil field as big as Iraq's oil reserves ???
Is this the reason why the DOE survey ship was harassed ?, and why there is this Philippine naval buildup ? I mean if this is verified to be true , this is game-changing news !!! anyone knows whats the latest on this ?
Aquino bares 2 oil exploration projects
January 26, 2011, Manila Bulletin
MANILA, Philippines – President Aquino is excited about two oil exploration projects in the country, including a probable oil reserve in Palawan that may be as big as Iraq’s stock.
The President mentioned the two prospective oil finds that could help meet the country’s oil requirements during a tribute to his mother, the late President Corazon Aquino, in Malacañang last Tuesday.
“A military official has told me about the start of a seismic study in an area of Palawan which allegedly is as big as Iraq’s proven reserves. Iraq, by the way, has the second biggest proven reserve next to Saudi Arabia,” he said in his speech.
The President also cited that local officials of Mindoro Occidental have also informed him about the “sizeable natural gas field” that is being verified in their province.
“Those are the natural resources that are found in the country but there are also those secured by our hard work,” he said. Apart from oil exploration projects, the President highlighted the flow of investments in the country coming from Japan and other countries. (Genalyn Kabiling)
If the seismic study turn out to be a sucess...can we borrow money based on these exploration from International Financing to fund the security of these reserve?

I believe that's what our Govt. will try to do in order to maximize the PROFITS from these Explorations and if it does, maybe we can even ask Uncle Sam for us to acquire (8-10) F-35 Lightning.....
