Things are getting better for the Navy. First it was reported in Strategy page that the it is mounting mini missiles ( spike-er a powerful guided anti-tank with a reange up to 10 kms) on its small PCF's to neutralize small naval targets and this has been a secret until strategy page expsed it. Now we have 4 repaired ships with upgraded capanilities ready to be deployed in our western frontier. Really the Navy is doing its homework they desrve commendations folks

Changed engines? Did it improve its speed and features from its previous known capability? BTW what are the speeds of these ships?

Running out of Cyclones?

What about the Kagitingan-class

Posted Image

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Kagitingan class small patrol boats

Displacement: 150 tons full load
Dimensions: 37 x 6.2 x 1.7 meters/121.4 x 20.3 x 5.6 feet
Propulsion: 2 diesels, 2 shafts, 2,050 bhp, 16 knots
Crew: 30
Armament: 1 dual 30 mm, 4 12.7 mm MG, 2 7.62 mm MG
Concept/Program: German-designed boats; first two built in Germany, others apparently assembled at Cavite, perhaps from kits. An unsuccessful design. Discared by 1992 but some units reactivated in 1994. There is some confusion as to which are actually in service.

Builders: W. Muller, Hameln, Germany (see note above).

Number Name Year FLT Homeport Notes
P101 Kagitingan 1979 PAC

Antonio Luna (PG-141)
Displacement: 279 tons full load
Length: 144.4 ft (44 m)
Speed: 18 knots
Range: 1,100 mi. at 18 knots
Crew: 6 officers + 52 enlisted
Armament:
2-Bofors 40mm/60
2-Oerlikon 20mm

Notes:

Steel hull based on that of Tirad Pass large patrol craft built for Philippine Coast Guard by Japan in 1974. Superstructure based on that of Kagitingan class. One more laid down at Sangley Point in Cavite. Original plan called for 6 to be built but this number may not be reached.

It can help create a new Stingray group.

Much slower though compared to the Cyclones. :dunno:

Better deal? GET MORE CYCLONES! :thumb:

I would like to see the above boats' main weapon upgraded to Rheinmetall's new 30mm naval gun:

Quote:

In January 2005 the company started with the development of a new family member in the range of light naval gun systems – the MLG 30/ABM. The MLG 30/ABM light naval gun system is designed to answer the asymmetric threat as the self-defence system for today and tomorrow, for all types of warships and patrol boats against surface-, air- and shore targets.

The high accuracy of the system against asymmetric targets is achieved by the combination of a highly dynamic mount, a precise fire control, and the Mk 44 Bushmaster cannon, combined with the latest air burst munition (ABM) technology. The ABM round will add greatly to the lethality and firepower of the MLG 30/ABM, making it superior to any other system of its kind.

The ABM round is based on NATO-qualified Ahead technology. The projectile contains a programmable fuse, which is with data from the fire control unit via an electronic ignition programmer coil at the muzzle. The impact of the 30 mm x 175 ammunition can be influenced by altering the distance at which the sub-projectiles are released ahead of the target, as well as by varying the number of rounds fired. ABM projectiles are hardened against all electronic countermeasures.

The MLG 30/ABM significantly improves today's ability of ships in dealing with the more complex operational requirements they confront. This is of particular relevance with regard to nation building and peacekeeping operational tasks as well as the ability of self-protection against terrorist attacks.

The MLG 30/ABM design allows integration in all kinds of vessels without need for deck penetration. Being lightweight and small in dimension it proves an unequalled flexibility in installation location. The gun mount is remotely controlled via a gunner control station, it is equipped with day- and night vision sensors enabling automatic target tracking as well as manual control of the MLG 30/ABM.

The MLG 30/ABM is ideally suited in meeting today's needs for ships self defence and protection against:

--Air targets up to 2,500 m
--Surface targets up to 4,000 m
--HSMST up to 2,500 m
--Floating mines up to 1,000 m
--Shore targets and sea policing tasks.

The first MLG 30/ABM system is expected to be ready for land-based demonstration in spring 2006 and will then be shown in life firing to an international audience of interested customers.

According to "MALAYA" on its May 18, 2006 issue on the 2nd page The Phil Navy is commissioning and putting into service 4 newly upgraded ships one of this is the BRP Quezon which is a Frigate type. The new said that the frigate is capable of detecting, tracking and destroying hostile surface and undersea crafts. The total cost of repair anounted to 45 million pesos. Good move by the navy.

Anyone who can post pictures of this newly repaired ships.

Still looks like the same old Admirable class minesweeper of the '40s.

It's as old as my mom. At least my mom can still whip some butt. I read that in the news it has a new 40mm canon and some .50cal AA. It can shoot down a kite at 500mts.

A for effort.

Let's see what an old ship can do.

An "A" for effort indeed, but I will just wait and see for the outcome of these recent upgrades. Personally, I am not that impressed. The Quezon is a WWII vintage and should've been decommisioned a long time ago.
